Biography

Catherine (Wallis) Argile was born in England.

All June Hind knew of Catharine was her first name. [1]

Catherine was born to William and Mary Wallis. She was christened on 11 Jun 1820 at Beeley, Derbyshire, England.[2]

At the time of the 1841 England census, Catherine was 20 and lived in Bakewell with her parents William and Mary, and four younger siblings, plus three lodgers.[3]

Catherine married William Argile (listed as William Argile Bowler) at Bakewell, Derbyshire, on 10 Jun 1841.[4]

At the time of the 1851 census Catherine was 29, living with husband William Argile at 30 Woodend, Heanor and children William (6, b Belper), Thomas (3, b Heanor), and Fanny (1, b Heanor). [5]

Catherine's husband William must have died between the conception of Mary Argile (age 3 in 1861) and the date of the 1861 census.

At the time of the 1861 England Census, Catherine Argyle was age 38, widowed, head of the household at 95 Loscoe Road, Heanor. She was a rag and bone dealer. Her children William (unmarried age 15 Coal Miner), Fanny (age 11 Scholar), John (age 9 Scholar), Charles (age 7 Scholar) and Mary (age 3 Scholar) lived with her. [6]

At the time of the 1871 England Census, Catherine Argyle was widowed, head of the household, age 49, Shop Keeper, living at 33 North Street, Ilkeston. Living with her were her children William (unmarried age 26 Cord Wainer b Derbyshire Belper), Thomas (unmarried age 23 Coal Miner b Derbyshire Heanor), Fanny (unmarried age 21 Dress Maker b Derbyshire Heanor), John (unmarried age 19 Coal Miner b Derbyshire Heanor), Charles (unmarried age 17 Fruit Dealer b Derbyshire Heanor), Elizabeth F (age 4 b Melbourne Derbyshire). [7]

In 1881 Catherine was a widow, 59, head of the household at Bath Street, lkeston. Living with her were her son John W (29) and his wife Ann Argile (29), son Charles H Argile (1, b Ilkeston) and granddaughter Elizabeth Argile (14). [8]

At the time of the 1891 England Census Catharine Argyle was head of the household, widowed, age 69. She was a General Dealer living at 63 Bath Street, Ilkeston with daughter Mary (spinster, age 33 Dress Maker (employer) b Derbyshire Heanor). Also Katie Padgett (age 15, boarder, dressmakers apprentice) and Frank Birch (visitor age 7). [9]

In 1901 Catharine lived at Bath Street, Ilkeston. Age 79, head of the household, widowed, a General Dealer. Also living at the same address, daughter mary Argyle, age 42, assistant general dealer. [10]

An 84-year-old Catherine Argyle died in Basford in 1904.[11]

Research notes

William had five children, the youngest four all have mother's maiden name Wallis on their birth registrations; I cannot find his oldest child William Argile with the same mother. Humphrey-6461 20:09, 6 August 2018 (UTC)
