Samuel was born about 1833 in Massachusetts.
He was the son of Samuel Wallace and Emely Green, and the brother of Civil War veterans Alanson and James Wallis of the 54th Massachsuetts Volunteer Infantry, the first regiment in the United States made up entirely of enlisted men of color.
He passed away in 1876 and is buried at Oak Knoll Cemetery in Palmer, Massachusetts.
