Robert Wallop was born on 20 July 1601 son of Sir Henry Wallop of Farleigh Wallop, the richest commoner in Hampshire, and his wife Elizabeth Corbet. Aged 14 he was educated at Hart Hall, Oxford and first elected to Parliament as Member for Andover in 1621.
By 1635 he had married Anne, daughter of Henry Wriothesley, Earl of Southampton and his wife, Elizabeth Vernon, who bore him a son and a daughter. He succeeded to his father’s estates in 1642.
Robert became a member of the Committee of Both Kingdoms in 1644. He was not a signatory of the King’s death warrant in 1649. With the failure of the Republican experiment a new election was called. It was rumoured that Robert intended to put up two republicans for Whitchurch which he controlled but in the end Robert himself was elected with Giles Hungerford. The Convention Parliament met for the first time on 23 April 1660, approved the Declaration of Breda and summoned the King, Charles II to return. Condemned as a regicide Robert was discharged from sitting on 18 June 1660 and replaced by his son, Henry. Robert was imprisoned for life.
His wife, Anne, died in 1662 but imprisonment did not prevent Robert from marrying again. By license from the Faculty Office issued 16 May 1666, he married Elizabeth Thompson. [1] There were no children from this marriage.
He died in the Tower of London on 16 November 1667 and was buried at Farleigh on 7 January 1667/8. [2]
This profile was previously attached to Mary Lambert as a spouse. However, as the only source for this marriage states that the Robert Wallopp involved was 30 years younger than this Robert Wallop, the marriage has been detached.
