The Age 12 May 1916
A SOLDIER KILLED
KNOCKED DOWN BY TRAM
Gunner F. James, of the Field Artillery Reinforcements, Maribyrnong camp, died early yesterday morning at the base hospital from injuries received through his being knocked down by an electric tram on Union-road, Ascot Vale, late on Wednesday night. Deceased, who had been on leave, was returning to camp, and ran across Union-road near Ascot Vale railway station to catch a tram. He failed to notice another tram coming in the opposite direction, and was heavily struck by it and knocked down. He got up, and staggered to the side of the road, where he sat down. Two other soldiers from the same camp, noticing his condition, went across to render assistance. As James seemed to be in a serious condition an ambulance from the show grounds camp was sent for, and he was taken to the base hospital, where he
died shortly after admission, the cause of death being fractured skull, lacerated brain, and broken leg. The body has been removed to the Morgue. The military authorities at the Maribyrnong camp are holding an inquiry into the accident. [2]
