Origins

David Joseph Walsh was born on August 30, 1898 in Manhattan, New York. His parents were David Walsh and Mary Sullivan.[1]

Military Service

David J. Walsh served in the U.S. Army from 12 June 1916 to 21 June 1917.[2]

Marriage and Children

David Walsh married Nellie McCormack on April 7, 1918.[3] They had five children: David Jr, Catherine, Margaret, Helen, and Lorraine.

Census

1900 US Census: David Walsh, age 2, is enumerated in the household of his father, David Walsh, at 1970 3rd Avenue, Manhattan, New York.[4] His father's occupation is listed as Carpenter. Also in the household are his mother, Mary; two sisters: May, age 5; Anna, age 4 months; and a boarder named Timothy Ward.

1905 New York Census: David Walsh, age 6, is enumerated in the household of his father, David Walsh, at 332 East 101st Street, Manhattan, New York.[5] His father's occupation is listed as Carpenter. Also in the household are his mother, Mary, and four sisters: May, age 9; Anna, age 6; Evelyn, age 3; Loretta, age 1 month.

1910 US Census: David Walsh, age 11, is enumerated as an inmate at the Asylum of the Sisters of St. Dominic (Catholic orphanage) in Orangetown, New York.[6] Two of his sisters, Evelyn and Anna, are also living there.

1920 US Census: David Walsh, age 21, is head of the household at 534 West 55th Street, Manhattan, New York.[7] There are at least four other families living in the same building. David works as a Longshoreman. Also in the household are his wife, Nellie, and their son: David Jr, age 1 year and 1 month.

1930 US Census: David Walsh, age 31, is head of the household at 552 West 55th Street, Manhattan, New York.[8] David works as a Longshoreman. Also in the household are his wife, Nellie, and their children: David Jr, age 11; Catherine, age 9; Margaret, age 8; Helen, age 4 years and 5 months.

1940 US Census: David Walsh, age 42, is head of the household at 114 West 102nd Street, Manhattan, New York.[9] David is described as a Laborer at the Surrogate's Court. Also in the household are his wife, Nellie, and their children: David, age 21; Catherine, age 20; Helen, age 14; Lorraine, age 9.

Death

David Walsh died in July 1980[10], and is buried beside his wife in Calvary Cemetery, Queens, New York.[11]
