Notes

John Peter Walter was born in 1754 in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, the child of Jacob and his cousin, Elizabeth Huffman Walter. It was family common knowledge that Peter had served in the Revolutionary War as men between the ages of 18-53 were called to do. He was shot throught the hip which caused him to limp and the long recuperation of his injury is suspected to have been what caused him to delay in marrying. No records, however, have been found to support his service.

In the late 1700s, Peter's father encouraged him and his brother Jacob to head westward and move to the newly opened territory in Irwin Township in what would become Venango County, PA. Their older brother John stayed in Westmoreland. Peter settled on a 400 acre tract of land near where the Old Log Cemetery stands present day and just two miles south of where his brother Jacob had taken a claim. The Walter brothers arrived in Irwin in 1798 along with their relatives, the Huffman men, to establish their claims. Work on their new settlements was contained to the colder parts of the year and they were forced to make the several day journey back to Westmoreland to care for their fields there during the summer months. They could not bring their families to live in Venango until 1809, after they had built dwellings and could care properly for their families.

Peter's 400 acres was situated on land next to a claim staked by a Patrick Davidson. One year, while clearing his land, Patrick broke his arm. During his recuperation, Peter took possession of Patick's claim! The matter was amicably settled when Peter offered Patrick a cow in payment for the land he had essentially stolen. Family historian, Iland Walter writes of Peter: "He was a fiery old guy. It took a lot to provoke him, but when he got angry, he could lick his weight in wildcats". Family lore has it that one day, while returning from being out in the woods with axes slung over their shoulders, Peter and his son-in-law, Isaac Porter got into a spat. Isaac tired to provoke Peter by teasing him about his coon dog and other things, but that didn't seem to affect Peter. Isaac went on to malign Peter's second wife, Katherine Cole, calling her an unmentionable name and even that did not disturb Peter. When Isaac next disparaged Peter's black mare as being swayback, that did it! Peter threw down his tool, gave Isaac a good thrashing and picked him up bodily and threw him in a stream they were walking near. After the incident, the men picked up their tools and walked back home together as if nothing had happened. The Walter men were known to keep fine horses and were very proud of them.

Peter married Anna Maria Mary Huffman, (his much younger cousin) daughter of Johan Adam and Anna Maria (maiden name unknown) Huffman. They had ten children between 1790 and 1809, most of them were born in Westmoreland County, PA. After Anna's death, he then married Katherine Carroll Cole in 1832. Katherine was his son, Philip's mother-in-law. Peter died in 1855 in Irwin, Pennsylvania, at the age of 101, and was buried on the Walter farm as the Walter and Huffman families were known to do.
