Biography

Martin Walter was born on February 2, 1897 to Fred Walter and Johanna Marin in Burson, Calaveras, California. His parents were both born in Germany and became naturalized citizens.

In 1900, 3-year-old Martin lived in Jenny Lind, Calaveras, California with his parents and sister, Anna, and brother, Lawrence. His father, Fred, was employed as a blacksmith. [1] By 1910, Martin had another sister, Dorothy. [2]

On June 5, 1918, Martin registered for the United States World War I military draft, for which he claimed exemption. He was a 21-year-old college student and resident of Oakland, Alameda, California. He was described as short with a medium build, and with blonde hair and blue eyes. [3]

In 1920, Martin resided on 23rd Street in Oakland with his parents and siblings, Anna, Lawrence, Dorothy and Esther. His father Fred's occupation was as a fruit and nut vendor. His 24-year-old sister, Anna, was a saleswoman in a department store. [4]

Martin, age 27, married Dorothy Deed Mosher, age 22, on October 23, 1925 in Oakland, Alameda, California. They had three children: Joan, William, and Isabelle.

In 1930, Martin and Dorothy lived on Carmel Avenue, in Albany, Alameda, California with their daughter, Joan, age 3. Martin was a dentist. [5]

By 1940, Martin and Dorothy had added two more children - Isabelle and William (Bill) - to their home on Carmel Avenue. Martin continued his private practice as a dentist. [6]

Martin died on July 22, 1969 in South Lake Tahoe, El Dorado, California. He died the week the United States landed the first man on the moon. [7] He was buried in Sunset View Cemetery, El Cerrito, California. [8]
