Robert was born on 12 May, 1870 at Howlong, near Albury, New South Wales, the son of Neville and Elizabeth Walter. He attended the Howlong Public School.
On 28 October 1897, Robert married Ellen Veitch at Leichhardt in Sydney, where one of Ellen's relations lived.
His working life was very varied. He was working as a butcher in Wodonga in Victoria in 1897, at the time he married his wife, Ellen Veitch. He was the owner of the Federal Bakery at Howlong from 1905-1911. Later he was a share farmer, contracted as a chaffcutter operator and mail contractor. From around 1924 until 1927 he owned a delicatessen business in Droop Street in Footscray in Melbourne. Robert and Ellen and their two youngest children moved to the city for those years. He returned to Howlong and purchased a dairy farm at the Old Mill Hotel on the Howlong Road which he also called 'Piercefield' about 1927.
Robert died on 9 August 1941, and is buried at Howlong cemetery.
