Biography

Alleyne Walter was born in 1724 and baptised on 18 May 1724 at Godalming, Surrey, England. He was the 14th child of John Walter and Lucy Alleyne.

As with all his brothers, Alleyne attended Westminster School, which was attached to Westminster Abbey. He started in 1730 at the age of 6 and matriculated at the age of 16, going to Christ Church College, Oxford. His father died when he was 11 years old.

'Westminster Ordinations 1660-1829' states "Alleyne Walter LLB Tests, Christ Church Oxford for D & P, 12th June, 1748 P. 19th June, 1748. On 24th May 1748 he became a BCL (Bachelor of Civil Law) and on the 6th June, 1752 a DCL (Doctor of Civil Law)".

When he left Oxford, Alleyne became Rector of St John the Baptist Church, Bisley and Dean of Stoke in Surrey, being presented by his elder brother, Abel Walter who was Patron of that Church from 1739 to 1748. His nephew the Rev. Neville Walter (his brother Abel's son) was his Curate at Bisley for a few years. He was rector of St Lawrence Church, Chobham from 21 Jun 1748 to 1779.

Alleyne married Sarah Winch (nee Bird) on 17 Aug 1754. [1]

Alleyne purchased Hoe Place in Woking, Surrey in 1761, from his brother Henry Walter.

In 1779, Alleyne became Rector of the Church of the Holy Spirit at Crowcombe in Somerset. Sir Henry Carew, was a parliamentary friend of his father's, and had a property in Crowcombe. In the Somerset County Records Office is the following:

To the Reverend Father Charles by Divine permission, Lord Bishop of Bath and Wells. We, whose names are hereunder written testify and make known that the Rev. Alleyne Walter, LLD Rector of Bisley, County of Surrey and Diocese of Winchester, having been personally known to us for the space of three years past, hath during that time lived piously, soberly and honestly, nor hath he at anytime, as far as we know and believe, held, written or taught anything contrary to the doctrine or discipline of the Church of England. In witness whereof we have hereunder to set our hands dated this 10th day of July, 1779. John Sibley - Rector of Walcot; John Chapman - Archdeacon of Bath; Edward Cooper LLD - Rector of Buckland St. Mary."

In the time of Alleyne Walter, Crowcombe was a thriving market town. The Rev. Neate, Vicar of Crowcombe in 1972, related he had seen notes purporting that the poet Wordsworth had lived for a time at Nether Stowey and had been in the habit of walking across the Quantock Hills to yarn with Dr. Alleyne Walter.

After the death of his first wife, Sarah Bird, Alleyne remarried twice. His second wife was Bridget Butler (née Stacey) the widow of John Butler of Kilcash Ireland. After she also died, he married Catherine Bendyshe, daughter of Ralph Bendyshe and Mary Ayleff. He had no further issue from these marriages.

Alleyne died in 1806, probably in Devon, and was buried on 10 Mar 1806 at Crowcombe church in Somerset. Alleyne's will was proved on 20 Mar 1806. He left his estate to be divided amongst his grandchildren.
