Biography

Son of Morris Walter (1537-1593) & Jane Warren [needs citation] It is possible that he was born near Trefan (Tryfan?), Wales. [1]

In about 1601 he purchased the manor and castle of Roche from the de Longuevilles.[2]

He married Jane, daughter of Francis Laugharne of S. Brides, and Janet, daughter of John Philipps of Picton Castle. Based on his will, known children included:

  • Rowland
  • Elizabeth
  • Ann
  • Marie

William Walter of Roche Castle, gent, had his will drawn up on 10 April 1616. [3][4]He made bequests to and mentioned:

  • the daughter of Alice Walter
  • my son and heir Rowland
  • his children William, Richard, Elizabeth and Jane
  • William Kynner (?), son of my daughter Elizabeth
  • my son in law John Kynner, Alderman
  • his children Francis, William, Richard, John the younger, Ann, Lettice, Jennett and Deborah
  • my wife Jane Walter alias Laugharne
  • my daughter Ann and her children
  • my daughter Marie (?) and her children
  • my cousin Roger Walter
  • my aunt Alice Walter alias Middleton
  • my cousin Jane Walter alias Marign (?)

His will was probated on 8 June 1616.

Research Notes

In 1601 Roche Castle was sold to William Walter of Trefan, and the Walter family retained ownership of the castle until after the Civil War. [5]
