Biography

Birth

Catherine was allegedly born 17 Oct 1759 on the frontiers west of the Allegheny Mountains, at a time when the territory was officially "Indian Country" and claimed by both Pennsylvania and Virginia.
Note: In 1750, Cumberland County, PA was formed out of the Cumberland Valley, west of the Susquehanna River. The land further west of the Allegheny Mountains was purchased from the Iroquois by the 1768 Treaty of Albany (NY) (the "New Purchase"), which opened the land extending to "all of the lands south and east of the Ohio River", for European settlement. This land was opened to Pennsylvania settlers. In 1772, this New Purchase land became Bedford County; and in 1774, the western portion of this land became Westmoreland County. Meanwhile, Virginia was patenting lands in the same area; in 1774, Virginia Governor Lord Dunsmore led a battalion of Virginia militia to the source of the Ohio and pushed the Shawnee and Mingo indians north and west of the Ohio to make the land safe and available for Virginian colonists. After his victory, the Virginia legislature declared this area as the District of West Augusta, and established a county court and government which began issuing land patents to colonists. In 1776, the District was divided into the Virginia counties of Monongalia, Yohogania, and Ohio. The western VA/PA border was not settled until the 1780s, when Virginia gave up its claims to the land northeast of the Mason-Dixon line and Pennsylvania assumed provenance of all Virginia land claims made in the area up to that time.
