Biography

William was born in 1864. He was the son of John Walters and Catherine Baker. The newspaper reported his birth as taking place on 17 September but his birth registration gives a birth date of 16 September. He had been born at his mother's residence in Whau Road in Auckland. (NEW ZEALANDER, VOLUME XXI, ISSUE 2237, 30 SEPTEMBER 1864)

On 21 May 1890, Wiliam married Hannah Maria (Annie) Hackett in Gisborne. The Electoral roll of 1905-1906 shows his occupation as Fireman.

He died on 4 September 1945 and was buried at Taruheru Cemetery on 6 September. He was recorded as being 87 years old when he died, which is inconsistent with the birth record. Further substantiation of the birth and death is required to ensure they reflect the same person.

William's wife Hannah Walters was also buried in Taruheru Cemetery in Gisborne.
