OBITUARY MRS. GEORGE BAILEY, OF NANA GLEN.
A wave of deep sorrow spread over this district on Wednesday last, when it was learned that Mrs George Bailey, of Nana Glen, had passed on, writes our Coramba correspondent. The high esteem in which she was held by a large circle of friends was manifested in the long funeral cortege that moved through Gale street, Coramba, on its way to the Methodist portion of the Coramba cemetery, on Thursday last, where the last rites were performed by the Rev. J. W. Booth. It was the largest funeral seen in Coramba for many years and, no doubt would have been larger had the news of Mrs Bailey's death been more widely known, as there was no more popular woman in the district, a popularity that was generally summed up in one sentence: "She was a fine old lady." Her popularity was based on that simple spirit of service to others, the disposition to help a "lame dog" over a stile. In a quiet unassuming way, she had helped many people in the Coramba district. Her geniality was infectious. Her 60 years rested lightly upon her, and she preserved the spirit of youth up till the last, retaining an active interest in the world until stricken down on Tuesday afternoon. Mrs Bailey was born in Coramba in the year 1875 and was the eldest daughter of Mr and Mrs M. Walters. Her father died some time ago, but her mother died comparatively recently, at the grand old age of 83 years. Her name was Sarah Jane. She was the eldest daughter of the family and, in addition, there were four sisters and nine brothers. Her parents were among the pioneers of Coramba. She was married in Coramba 37 years ago, and from Coramba she and her husband proceeded to Ulmarra, where they took up residence for a number of years, Mr Bailey at that time being a buyer of pigs for a well-known firm. From there, the couple went to New Zealand, but after a few years returned to this district and took up their abode on a farm at Nana Creek, near Nana Glen, where they resided since. The late Mrs Bailey was an excellent worker for her church and, despite her age, she never failed to assist with all functions held for it. Mrs Bailey reared a family of three daughters and one son, another son dying in infancy. The daughters are Mrs Pitman (May), of Teven, on the Richmond River; Mrs Hinchcliff (Belle), of Taree; Mrs Bolton (Irene), of Sydney; and the son is Mr Victor Bailey (Bucca Creek). All her family attended the funeral, and all her brothers and sisters, one sister, Mrs Parry, coming by plane from the north of Queensland. The family were all very devoted to her, and her brothers said that she had been a second mother to them, their needs always coming before hers. After a short service at the Methodist Church, Coramba, the funeral proceeded to the cemetery, four of her brothers (Stan, Pearce, Richard and Laban), acting as pall-bearers. A great number of beautiful wreaths were sent by her numerous relatives and friends, the most beautiful being that from the family. Mr Bailey's father's death took place only about six weeks ago in Singleton.
