Research Notes: On 14 July 1796, Rebecca Chandler, widow, was appointed administratrix for the estate of Samuel Chandler, late of Farmington. The estate inventory was valued at $1,185 in 1796. On 13 January 1797, Solomon Adams of Farmington was appointed guardian of Jacob (age 15), Moses (age 18) and Samuel (age 19), all minor sons of the late Samuel Chandler. On 13 December 1797, Solomon Adams was appointed guardian of Phebe (age 14), daughter of the late Samuel Chandler; and on 16 January 1798, Solomon Adams was appointed guardian of Samuel Chandler's daughters Rebecca (age 6) and Sally (age 4). Also on 16 January 1798, the administratrix filed an account fo rthe estate of Samuel Chandler - by this time she had become the wife of Jonas Green (Probate Records of Lincoln County, Maine, pp. 272-273).

From the foregoing, it appears that Samuel Chandler died, not as a pauper in 1796 and by early 1798, all of his known minor children had Solomon Adams appointed as their guardian; and the widow Rebecca had married a Jonas Green.

A Solomon Adams was the husband of Hannah Butterfield who was first cousin of the deceased Samuel's children. Hannah Butterfield was the daughter of Hannah Chandler who married Samuel Butterfield. Hannah Chandler was the sister of the deceased Samuel Chandler.

There are reports that Rebecca (Walton) (Chandler) (Green) Stevens was not mentally stable. On page 340 of The Chandler Family, there is this cryptic statement signed by Thomas Johnson and others: "We beg leave to inform you of the Scituation of Mrs. Rebecca Chandler, widow, of Farmington, who is deranged." However, it is believed she married twice after the death of Samuel Chandler. She was said to have died suddenly as a result of a fall from her chair.

In the Kennebec County Courthouse, Augusta, Maine, there is data confirming that the widow Rebecca (Walton) Chandler married Jonas Green. In volume 19, page 356, Rebecca (Chandler) Walker refers to the dower of her mother Rebecca Green out her father's estate. In volume 16, page 163 Jonas Green conveys land that was set of fto Rebecca widow of Samuel Chandler...by virtue of my marriage with the said Rebecca.

There is at best, a tenuous connection between Samuel Chandler and Rebecca, daughter of Davis and Phoebe Walton. On page 116 of the Walton Family book, it is stated that this Rebecca Walton is probably the Rebecca who married Samuel Chandler. [6]
