Rhoda Walton corresponded with James Rowlison while he was in the Civil War. They were married on 22 Nov 1865 and left with one son in the winter or early spring of '66 to '67 traveling by riverboats (3) to Hannibal, Missouri and overland to a farm southeast of Kirksville. Four more children were born there. They moved to a farm near Moulton, Iowa in 1864 where Martha Ann was born. The lived on "Peru Bottom" near Peru, Nebraska for about three years - Myrtle Amy was born. Then onto four farms around Edgar, Nebraska where James, Roy, and Mabel were born. They sold out in November 1886 except for a team and a wagon, then to Grand Island, Nebraska to the State G.A.R. Convention and onto a homestead west of Hoxie, Kansas. Ethel was born in a sod house on the homestead in November 1888. James Demetris Rowlison died in Aug 1890 leaving Rhoda with a family of small children. She was a 19th century single mother for years. Her children later looked after her, to the extent that was necessary. She later returned to Clay County, Nebraska and lived with her eleventh child, sixth and youngest daughter Ethel Aletha until she died in 1932.
