Additional information on land deeds etc has been compiled by his daughter, Clementine's, descendants and by genealogist Sandra Lake Lassen. I will not add anything additional here but will suggest that anyone interested should consult the large file stored at the Ashe County Public Library in West Jefferson.
At home with family in 1840. Oldest known child is born in 1847-I have no marriage record but estimated 1845.
See photos of original and New River chart.
See photo. The William Spencer living next door may be Nancy's brother.
Loftin, his brother Thomas and Thomas' son Wiley all enlisted as Privates into the 50th Regiment, Co. D of the Virginia Infantry on June 4, 1861 at Fork of Wilson, Grayson County.[3] "The 50th Virginia, Co D began organizing as a militia unit somewhere between April and May of 1861. The unit was comprised of mostly farmers, laborers, and citizens from Grayson County, Virginia and nearby Ashe County, North Carolina becoming known as the “Wilson Rifles” and the “Grayson Hornets”. The original enlistments included four officers, Captain Lynville J. Perkins, 1st Lt. Ambrose Pugh, 2nd Lt. Thomas F. Mitchell, and 3rd Lt. John L. Cowardin. These officers and seventy plus men enlisted at Fork of Wilson moved on to Wytheville, Virginia in June of that same year answering a call from the newly formed Confederate Army to help protect Virginia and her borders from invasion of the United States Union Army and thus becoming Company D of the 50th Virginia Regiment Infantry."[4]
Loftin is listed as having died of disease on 8/24/1861.[7]
Loften N. Walton's death on Aug 25 1861 of fever at the age of 45; reported by his wife, Nancy Walton.[9]
See photo. Lofton's Estate and his brother William Walton-1891 show up on the list. I am speculating that the Sarah Walton listed is his brother's, Thomas Walton-1899, wife, Sarah Reedy-142, as I've noted no other Sarah Walton of age to be a land owner in this time period. I haven't studied the Grayson County maps enough to be fully versed on the locations noted.
