Biography

Thomas Walwyn was born about 1350 at Hellen's, Much Marcle, Herefordshire, the son and heir of Richard Walwyn and his wife, Joan de Helyon. [1]

Thomas married Isabel Hathaway, daughter and co-heiress of Thomas Hathaway of Ruardean in Gloucestershire.[1] [2] By 1382 when her father's estates at Ruardean were divided they were already married. [3] According to Burke his wife was Isabel, a member of the Baskerville family. [4] This has been discounted since Thomas held the Manor of Ruardean, a possession of the Hathaway family. [2]

Thomas' career appears to have begun in the service of Roger Mortimer, Earl of March. He was first returned to Parliament in 1397 and later entered the service of William Beauchamp, Lord Abergavenny.

Thomas died in 1415, survived by Isabel and several sons of whom Richard was the heir. [3] Thomas made his will, one of the first in English, on the 12th of March 1415, providing for his wife, his sons, Richard, William and Malcolm, his daughters Joan (wife of Hugh Folyot) and Christine and his brother, William. He asked to be buried at St Bartholemew in Much Marcle and appointed as his executors John Walwyn of Stoke Edith, the latter's son, Thomas Walwyn, Master John Prophet and Joan, Lady Abergavenny.[1][2]

Research Notes

"There is a good deal of confusion in the early part of the Walwyn pedigree and the version given in Burke's Commoners (possibly compiled by R. B. Phillipps) evidently repeats some of the generations twice over. According to the Atkyn's Glouc. the estate of Clearwell, which came to the Walwyns by the heiress of Grendour, left them with Alice, dau. and heir. of William Walwyn, on her marriage with Thomas Baynham. Their son, Sir Christopher Baynham, d 1540. The family of Walwyns had numerous junior branches, one of which was seated at Hollowood in M. Marcle." [5]
