St Thomas Daily Times 13 June 1918 p1 (Thur):

Corporal George Want is Killed in Action - Mrs [Emma] Davy, 27 St Catharines St, has received work the sad news from England that her grandson [-in-law, husband of granddaughter Ruth], Corp Geo Want, was killed in action recently. Mrs Davy received the news in the form of a letter from Mrs Want, wife of her grandson [error, Mrs Want was her granddaugher Ruth née Thorpe], which read as follows: “I am very sorry to tell you that poor George was killed on May ... I received the awful news last Saturday and it has made me very ill indeed. It seems terrible that so many young men must lose their lives so suddenly. George was only 23 and I am sure that I have lost one of the best husbands. We are very anxious over our Freddie [probably Ruth's half brother Fred W Petchell], too, as we have not heard from him for over three weeks now. I will close for now and will write to you again later. Best love to all. Ruth.

PS: George has often written to me and told me how good you were to him for which I am very grateful to you”

Corporal Want was well known in this city, having lived here [St Thomas, Elgin, Ontario, Canada] previously to enlisting. He had been wounded four times, and gassed twice, and was on active duty at the time he met his death”
