Harry Ward worked first for the Illinois Central Railroad, then, starting in 1884 for the Milwaukee Railroad, being promoted to a conductor in 1887. After he retired, "several years" before 1928, he worked in real estate and insurance in Perry, IA.
He was in attendance at the Lincoln-Douglas debate in Fond du Lac, WI, although as a young boy. His memory involved the physical contrast between the tall and thin Abraham Lincoln and the short and "portly" Stephen Douglas (Perry, IA newspaper notation, 1929).
There is inconsistent information regarding where he was born. In the family tree attached to the birth certificate of Barbara Timm Henle (his granddaughter), he was born in Washtensaw County, Michigan. The 1850 US Census finds the family in Michigan and states he was born in Michigan. His obituary says he was born in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin.
The 1850 US Census has him living in Lima Township, Michigan. There is a cemetery there in which a Ward family is buried, including a Hiram Ward 1788-1842.[1][2] Could be a relative? There are also some Palmers buried there, including a Russel Palmer, the name of his grandfather, died 7 Aug 1854 at age 51.[3]
