Amelia Ward was born in 1839 in Canewdon, Essex, England to John Ward and Rebecca (Grimes) Ward. Her birth was registered in Rochford, Essex in the last quarter of the year, with mother's maiden name Grimes.^[1]

Amelia Ward, daughter of John, a labourer, & Rebecca, residing at Canewdon, was christened on 15 Dec [1839] at St Nicholas' in Canewdon.^[2]

In 1841 Amelia Ward (age 1) lived in Canewdon with her father John (40), mother "Mary" (30), and three siblings: Sarah (9), John (6), and William (4).^[3]

In 1851 Amelia Ward (age 11) lived in Paglesham, Essex with her father John (50, Agricultural Labourer), mother Rebecca (40), and three siblings: John (16, Agricultural Labourer), Emma (7), and Ellen (1), as well as five lodgers: Thomas Anderson (25, Agricultural Labourer), George Lancaster (20, Agricultural Labourer), James Lancaster (24, Agricultural Labourer), Richard Barnard (26, Agricultural Labourer), and Thomas Auten (14, Agricultural Labourer).^[4]
