Biography

Maude Ethel Ward was born in around 1893, the daughter of John A. and Frances E. "Frankie" (Wrightman) Ward, in the state of Washington, where she was raised. At some point after 1910 and prior to 1915, Maude moved to Southern California where, on December 28, 1915, she married Bernard Harry Mertzmann, the son of Harry and Mamie Marie (Boese) Mertzmann, in Los Angeles, California. Maude and Bernard had no children and according to Bernard's army draft papers in 1917 they were still married and living in Eureka, Humboldt County, California where Bernard worked as a licensed druggist.

The 1917 draft papers are the last reference that can be attributed to Maude and it is assumed she and Bernard divorced at some point while he was a member of the United States Army sent overseas during World War I. The loss of records leads to another assumption, that being that Maude married again during those war years based on the facts that Bernard was single, living outside of San Diego, California, in January of 1920 and had married his second wife by October of 1920.

No death or burial records have been found.
