Lafayette was the inventor of the mail-bag catcher which was "in use on many thousands of miles of railroads in the United States.[14] This machine is used to enable postal-cars to catch, while at full speed, mail-bags at offices and stations at which it is not desirable that such cars should stop; thereby aiding in the rapid transmission of the mails."[15][16]
Lafayette died 14 Apr 1882 in Jacksonville, Florida, and was buried at Greenwood Cemetery, Eustis, Florida.[17]
