Biography

1820 Born: Joseph was born in 1820 and Christened on 27 August 1820 ^[1]. He is the son of William Ward and Catherine Witsey.

Marriage(s) Purely speculatively, Joseph married Mary Ann Rhodes in the second quarter of 1844 in Grantham. They had a child, Fanny in December, 1844. Mary Ann died in the first quarter of 1845. And Joseph married Mary Ward in the fourth quarther of 1846. See Research Notes below.

1851 Census In 1851 Joseph is a 30 year old Ag Lab living in Church Street, Croxton Kerrial, Grantham, Leicestershire. ^[2] Living with Joseph is 24 year old wife Mary born in Harby, Leicester, and 2 sons - William aged 2 and Joseph aged 1 - both born in Croxton Kerrial.

1871 Census In 1871, Joseph is a 50 year old widower living in Town Street, Croxton Kerrial, Grantham, Leicestershire. ^[4] Also living there are children Mary A Ward (aged 20), Sarah J Ward (14), John Ward (13) and Robert Ward (6) - all recorded as born in Croxton.

Speculative Marriages

In the second quarter of 1844, a marriage was registered in Grantham, Leicestershire, between Joseph Ward and Mary Ann Rhodes - FreeBMD Marriage Index [3] A Mary Ann Rhodes was christened in Grantham on the 27th of April 1819 - FindMyPast ($) [4]

Then on the 2nd of February 1845, the vicar of Croxton Kerrial rather conveniently recorded the christening and birth dates of Fanny Ward (15 Dec 1844) to Joseph Ward and Mary Roads (sic) of Croxton. See FindMyPast ($) [5]

A death of Mary Ann Ward was registered in Grantham in the first quarter of 1845 - FreeBMD Death Index [6]

In the fouth quarter of 1846, a marriage was recorded for Joseph Ward and Mary Ward - FreeBMD Marriage Index [7]

The 1851 Census records Mary Ward, wife of Joseph, as 24 years old and born in Harby, Leicestershire. FindMyPast records a christening in Harby on the 30th of December 1824.

Fanny is not recorded with the family in 1851, but there is a 6 year old Fanny Ward recorded as born in Croxton and is a vistor in the household of Edmund and Elizabeth Wilson in Grantham - FamilySearch [8]
