Biography

Born 9 JUN 1925. Ward's Corner, Kent County, NB. [1] Died 16 JAN 1993. Saint John, St. John County, NB. [2] Buried 19 JAN 1993. Fernhill Cemetery, Saint John, NB. [3] Occupation: Sales Manager;Genealogist. Note: The following is from "The Seelys of New Brunswick" 1992, by Harold Fanjoy and. C.G. "Hap" Ward, himself: Clarence Greenwood "Hap" WARD: "Hap attended Buctouche Superior School KNT Modern Business College SJN. He served with the RCNVR, CIB and Kent Reg't, and RCAF. He was invalided out. of all three services, and sailed with the Merchant Navy between stints,. continuing to sail after the war. He had intended to make the sea his life. time career, but he made a 40,000 mile voyage around the world after he and. Joyce married, and came home to meet his new born son; and at that time. decided that sailing was no life for a family man. He tried many jobs; farming, machinist, garage mechanic, photographer,. taxi driver, until he went to work for T McAvity and sons Ltd., plumbing and. heating division (wholesalers). He started and managed the P & H div of. Emerson and Fisher Ltd. (A subsidiary of Sumner Co. Ltd) in Saint John, went. to head office in Moncton as Product Manager for the Company, returned to. Saint John as General Manager of E & F. The last five years he was Product Manager of the Pump Division, as well. as supervisor of Training for the Company, writing and teaching courses on. pumps, heating, ventilation, etc. for Staff, (10 branches across the Atlantic. Provinces), as well as for the Customers. He served two terms as president of the Canadian Institute of Plumbing. and Heating, Atlantic Region. He served as president of the Spruce Lake. ratepayers association after amalgamation with the City of Saint John. He was. instrumental in the formation of Saint John Co-operative Store, the first. direct charge unit in New Brunswick, serving as provisional president and two. further terms as president, until his company moved him to Moncton. He also. served a very short period as president of the Saint John Branch of the New. Brunswick Genealogical Association until poor health forced him to quit. Hap. spends whatever time he can on the Ward, Kierstead, Seely family histories, as. well as collateral branches of his families. Hap retired at the end of 1988.". NOTE: KNT = Kent County, New Brunswick. RCNVR = Royal Canadian Navy Volunteer Reserve. CIB = Canadian Infantry Batallion. RCAF = Royal Canadian Air Force. SJN = Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada. Apparently, the nickname "Hap" was short for "Happy", but I never heard. him say exactly when or where it originated. His sister Gertrude has a. photograph of him in uniform during WW2, taken in Hoboken, New Jersey; He. himself signed the photograph "by Happy". That is the only occasion I recall. where he signed anything but "Hap". He intensely disliked his given names and. was always called "Hap", except by his siblings, who called him Clarence, and. by my mother's family, who inexplicably (to me) called him "Chip". In the. telephone book he was always listed as "C.G. 'Hap' Ward". About 15 years before he was eligible to retire, I remember that he could. tell you, to the minute, almost, how long he had to go to retirment. I also. remember people asking him, as if to test him, how long he had. He knew. I often heard him say that what he wanted more than all was to retire at. about 2 PM on the first day he was eligible; he would look at his watch on the. last day, simply close his books, and walk out. It was not to be. C.G. "Hap" Ward retired a year early, due in part, to failing health. He. developed diabetes when he was in his fifties, and later, congestive heart. failure. It was liver cancer, however, which took his life; the same type of. cancer which took the life of his mother in 1935. The cancer had been. diagnosed only 2 days earlier. Of course, he had not been looking at all well. for quite some time before that. My sister Cathryn called me the day Dad's cancer was diagnosed, and. Daphne and I headed for "home" in Saint John the next day, January 16, 1993,. to see my father for what would probably be the last time. We arrived at. about 4 PM, with the light- and my father- fading. Hap died, with his loving family in attendence, at 7:30PM on the evening. of Saturday, January 16, 1993, in the Saint John Regional Hospital, Saint John. New Brunswick. It was a very cold night. These final entries (those not in quotation marks) were made by his. youngest child, his son, Robert Nelson Ward. I miss him greatly. Also ref- S-1211578C+126. Descended from Robert Seeley, via Seth Seely, UEL. It would appear that Hap was named after his great uncle, (his grandmother. Charlotte Berry's brother) Clarence Greenwood BERRY. Past president of the Saint John branch of the N.B. Genealogical Society. Marriage Husband Clarence Greenwood Ward. Wife Joyce Marion Johnson. Child: John Bruce Ward. Child: Cathryn Barbara Ward. Child: Robert Nelson Ward. Marriage 3 JUL 1948. Bloomington, ON. [4]
