Josiah was born November 15, 1661 at Branford, New Haven, Connecticut, according to the Barbour Collection of the Connecticut Vital Records.[1]
He was a son of John Ward, turner, and Sarah Hills, daughter of William Hills and Phyllis Lyman of Hartford, Connecticut.[2]
Josiah married twice.
Children:[2]
Children of Josiah and America:[2]
Josiah WARD, senior, of Newark, Essex County, in his will dated September 19, 1713 and proved April 16, 1716, names his second wife America, who has had Mary and expects a child, first wife Mary, who has had Samuel, Robert, Josiah, Laurence, all under age, and Sarah. The wife sole executrix, with Nathaniel WARD, senior and James NOTEMAN as supervisors (NJA 23:490) There was some question about Josiah WARD being mentally sound. Samuel WARD, son of Josiah, about 14 years old, chose as his guardian Abraham KITCHEN.[2]
Josiah died probably c. 1715, certainly before April 16, 1716, when his will was proved in Newark, Essex County, New Jersey.[2](Page 989)
Caution: Many Ward/Wardes, Settlers of Newark Two John Wards: John Ward, Sr. and John Ward, turner, settled in the area. Several of the same names appear in both families, such as Hill/Hills and Kitchell. As a result, there is a great deal of confusion and mixing of the families in various genealogies online. For this reason, it is of utmost importance that a reliable source for information be sought (this is always true, but never moreso).
