Biography

Sarah Ann Ward was born in 1816 in Wilberforce, New South Wales, Australia, the daughter of Michael Hanley Thompson Ward and Sophia Jane Elizabeth Crolsen [1][2], the sister of Sophia Jane (Ward) Turrell aka Gardner, Edward George Ward, Amelia Brenchley (Emily) Ward, Joshua Michael Ward, George Edward Ward, Esther Berfield (Ward) Wells, Selina Maria Ward, William (Harry) Ward, Harriet Ward and Frederick Wordsworth Ward.

In 1832 John Haswell, a convict who had arrived in Australia on the ship "Florentina", applied to marry Sarah but permission was not granted. They were in a Defacto Relationship for only about a year and a son James was born to Sarah In 1833, presumably to Haswell but James was to always be known by his future step-father's Last Name, "Garbutt". No birth record has been found for James "Garbutt".

Sarah then applied to marry Morgan Carroll on 28 August 1833, who was a convict who had arrived aboard the ship "Recovery" but she did not marry Carroll.

Instead, it would seem Sarah formed a relationship with Ticket of Leave Convict, Constable John Garbutt in 1833, who had arrived on the ship "Agamemnon" in 1820 and they married on 7 December 1835 in Pitt Town, New South Wales, Australia. Their son John Garbutt, was born on 12 September 1834 and was baptized on the day his parents married.

Sarah and John were married on 7 December 1835 at Pitt Town, New South Wales, Australia[3][4] and their daughter Maria (Garbutt) Dewson was born in about 1836.

Sarah's two sons, John Charles Garbutt and James Garbutt, were the nephews of Sarah's brother Frederick. It was James Garbutt who was with, and was arrested with, Sarah's brother Frederick Wordsworth Ward (aka Captain Thunderbolt) in 1856. Fred was ultimately convicted of receiving horses which his nephew, James, had stolen [5]".

The relationship with Garbutt was short-lived as Sarah left to him for William Shepper/Shepherd in 1837. John Garbutt, who had previously taken custody of their two children, John and Maria, was unfortunately drowned on about 5 July 1839.

Sarah married William Shepperd on 15 December 1839 at the St Andrews Church, Jerrys Plains, New South Wales, Australia. William was a Convict who had arrived in Sydney, New South Wales aboard the "Shipley" on 18 November 1818. Her children with William were Susannah Shepper(d) and Sophia Shepperd.

Sarah didn't seem to stay with one partner for long as her next relationship was with Edward Sackville Edwards which began around 1843 but there doesn't seem to be any record of marriage but they were together for up to 20 years.
The children from this relationship were Amelia Gladys (Edwards) Anderson, Harriet Ruth (Edwards) Crimmins, Esther (Edwards) Sinclair, George Crisp Edwards, Matilda (Edwards) Woodley, William Henry Edwards and Thomas Henry Edwards. The children Sarah had with Edward Sackville Edwards are not mentioned on Edward's Death Certificate.

This was Sarah's longest relationship with anyone before she eventually left him for James Barr around 1864 when Sarah stole one of Edward's horses to beginning her eventful "journey" with James with whom she remained until her death.

Sarah is mentioned in the Police Gazette dated 21 December 1864 as traveling with James Barr; "A warrant has been issued by the Inverell Bench for the arrest of Sarah Ann Edwards, wherein she is charged with stealing the horse No.12 in this week's list, the property of Edward Edwards. She is about 5 feet 9 inches high, brown hair and eyes, the two front teeth wide apart; had with her a little boy 3 years old; when last seen they were in company with one James Barr, alias "Jim the Fiddler"; 5 feet 8 inches high, dark complexion; they had five horses with them. Supposed to have gone to Rockhampton, or Peak Downs, Queensland"[6].

She was about 71 years old when she eventually married James Barr on 8 June 1887 at Wards Mistake, Guryra, New South Wales, Australia [7].

Sarah died at Glen Innes, New South Wales, Australia on 17 May 1892 and is buried at the Glen Innes Cemetery [8].
