Biography

Born: Ichabod, s. Jonath[a]n and Abigail, born Sept. 14, 1712, Newton, MA.[1]

Intentions and Marriages:[2]

  • Pidge (Pedg, Ridge), Elizabeth and Ichabod Ward, b of Attleboro. Int. Jan 24 1735/6. She married someone else.
  • Tyler, Phebe (Tiler), and Ichabod Ward __ ___ [17__] no intention recorded.

In 1753, he was of Ashford, Connecticut, and purchased land there; and in 1757 he was back in Attleboro, Massachusetts. He was a militia captain.[3]

Sept 1766 Ichabod Ward purchased 52 Acres in the northwesterly part of Ashford from Joseph Enos and Sarah Loomis (executors of James Enos) for the price of £18.4.0.[4] He gave "for good Will and parental love and affection" this land to "my daughter Sarah Shirtleff Wife of Silvanus Shirtleff" of Ashford.[5]

Ichabod and Phebee Ward were members of the Westford Church 11 February 1768.[6]

Captain Ichabod Ward and wife Phebe were admitted 5 June 1775 by letter from Attleborough to the Westford Ashford Church.[6]

Died: April 7, 1780[6] and is buried in the Westford Hill Cemetery, Ashford. "In Memory of Capt. Ichabod Ward; he departed this life April 7th, 1780 in the 69th year of his age."[7]

Ichabod Ward of Ashford made his will 21 August 1779, It was proved 2 May 1780. His will mentions Wife Phebe, and "my five daughters viz Jennet Ward Sarah Shirtleff Abigail Stanley Elisabeth Wing Phebe Wing and Molly Huntington." This is six daughters. Later reference is made in the will to Jennet Bullock widow of deceased son John. Ichabod also named his granddaughters, Lucinda and Persis Ward, children of deceased son John, and his son Joel. Besides land and other bequests, Ichabod left Joel his blacksmith and carpenter tools and named Joel executor. Among the items he left his wife were his looms and loom tackling.[8]
