“Sacred Ground The Old Saline Cemetery” by Jean COKER with Elizabeth Auld GRYMES says the following about this family: ¶gravestone 98; [top] R W H R 1823; [no insciptions on east or west sides of stone] R W = Robert WARDLAW; H R = Helen ROSS. ¶ROBERT WARDLAW, tenant in Myrie Hall (Miryhall, Mireyhall), married HELEN ROSS on 7 Feb 1800 in Saline. ¶ROBERT WARDLAW died intestate on 3 Mar 1817. His widow, HELEN ROSS, was his executor, who valued his estate at £27.15.00, consisting mostly of furnishings in the home. HELEN ROSS gave testimony that John Ayton, Esq., of Inchdairney, his landlard [sic], had sequestered all of ROBERT WARDLAS’s croft stocking and labouring instruments 8 days after his death. Andrew Gibson of Saline was the cautioner. (NRS: Testament CC20/4/30/326-327; Inventory CC20/4/30/348-349). ¶From records currently available, it is not possible to determine whether the 1823 date on the stone refers to the date of death of “H R” (Helen Ross) or whether it is the date of death of one of their children. Perhaps in time other documentation will help determine the meaning of this date. ¶[a photograph of the gravestone is included; and a list of their children with known births, and baptisms]
