George was born in 1865. He passed away in 1947.
When George was 8 his family moved from Newhall in Derbyshire to Keighley in West Yorkshire. He worked in a Woollen factory before working as a clerk at the Midland Railway, Keighley Branch.
In 1906, George was elected a Labour Member of Parliament for Stockport. Because of his backing of the war effort he was made a founding member of the Order of the Companions of Honour in 1917 by the establishment. Between 1917 and 1919 he served as Parliamentary Secretary to the Board of Trade. In the 1918 General Election he successfully stood for election as a Coalition Labour candidate.
Due to failing health he resigned as a Member of Parliament on 9 March 1920 and retired to Hove in Sussex.
