Biography

Ebenezer Ware was born on October 28, 1667, in Dedham, Suffolk, Massachusetts [1], the youngest of 10 children of immigrants Robert Ware, 56, and Margaret Hunting, 39. He married Martha Herring, daughter of Thomas Herring and Mary Pierce, on March 18, 1689, in Dedham, Massachusetts; she was the mother of his seven children. After her death he remarried several times including "Elizabeth", "Mehetable" and "Ann Harrison". He died in January 1765 at age 97.

":Ebenezer, born in Dedham, Oct. 28, 1667, bapt. 3.9.67; died Jan. (?) 1765, in Needham. He is said to have had five wives, one son and six daughters. He married first in Dedham, March 18, 1689-90, Martha Herring, daughter of Thomas and Mary (Pierce) Herring (b. in Dedham, July 11, 1668, d. Jan. 30 1709-10). His wife Elizabeth died in Needham, March 8, 1733-4. 'Mehetabel Wife of Aged Ebenezer Ware died suddenly,' Nov. 2, 1753. He married lastly, June 13, 1754, when 86 years of age Ann Harrison. 'The Deposition of Ebenezer Ware an aged man of Needham, dated Oct. 21, 1763 states that in 1693 he knew," - etc. [Smith's Newton, p. 261-5.]"[2]

Ebenezer Ware married Martha Herring 18 Mar 1689 and settled on the west side of Rosemary Brook in that area of Dedham which in 1711 became the town of Needham. The land was deeded to him by his father 25 Feb 1698/9 as "the whole tract of upland and swamp where his [Ebenezer’s] house do stand."[3]

The home was mentioned in the town records 12 Feb 1693/4 when Thomas Aldridge and Eleazar Kingsbury were chosen to lay out a highway over Rosemary Meadow Brook “"beginning at west side of the brook from Ebenezer Ware's, his house, above the said meadow in the old cow path, then turning north…”[4]

His farm totaled 120 acres and extended north from present Rosemary Street to around Central Avenue. In 1714, described as six score acres, it bounded west by town land, south by James Kingsbury's land, north by John Woodcock Jr.'s land and east by the "road leading to Rosemary Meadow."[5]

At some point Ebenezer built a second house at the southern end of his property, on the east side of the brook. This house was probably close to the railroad tracks near present Dana Place. A house marked 'Fuller' is approximately at that location on the 1771 Needham Map.[6] Ebenezer sold his house to the Fullers in 1732.

Wife Martha died 30 Jan 1709/10, leaving Ebenezer with 6 children.

In 1711 the town of Needham was set off from Dedham. Ebenezer signed the petition for incorporation in 1710 and was on the committees to run the town line and build the meetinghouse.[7]

He married-2 Elizabeth [Unknown], sometime prior to 1719/20 when she relinquished her dower in a deed.[8] There is a slim possibility that she was related to Nathaniel and Robert Harris who witnessed several of Ebenezer's deeds during this time period.

In January of 1719/20 Ebenezer and Elizabeth sold to his son Nathaniel [his only son, age 24, and still single] 30 acres west and south of his [Ebenezer’s] home.[9]

In December of 1732 he sold to his son Nathaniel 43 more acres of the farm, 5 acres (half of the 10 acres) near Oak Hill and a quarter acre on the southeast corner of his [Ebenezer’s] property. At the same time he sold his house with 35 surrounding acres to Richard and John Fuller.[10] [Lt. Thomas Fuller was in possession of this property in 1790.[11]]

He and Elizabeth then moved a mile or two west to Oak Hill [in the fork of Wellesley and Great Plain avenues] in that part of Needham that became the town of Wellesley in 1881. He was living there in 1755 when a deed mentioned "a piece of land called Oak Hill near Eb Ware's house.”[12] He had purchased 10 acres west of Oak Hill in 1724 from Caleb Smith.[13] These ten acres in 1735 were described as bounding east by Caleb Smith's land, north by Josiah Kingsbury's land, west by Timothy Kingsbury Jr.’s land and south by John Rice's land.[14]

Wife Elizabeth died in Needham [Wellesley] 18 Mar 1733/4.[15]

Ebenezer, now 70, married-3 about 1736 Mehitable Lyon, daughter of Thomas Lyon of Roxbury who died in 1734 naming his single daughter Mehitable in his will. She was then 56 and had probably been carry for her elderly father.[16] On 6 Feb 1735/6, prior to the marriage, Ebenezer purchased back from his son Nathaniel the 5 acres near Oak Hill and sold the total ten acres a few weeks later, on February 23, to Mehitable Lyon, who was described in the deed as spinster, late of Roxbury.[17] No mention of a house was made in the deed. The sale was probably in anticipation of their upcoming marriage which occurred sometime between then and 13 Dec 1737 when the property was described in a deed as belonging to Mehitable Ware.[18]

Wife Mehitable died in Needham 2 Nov 1753,[19] apparently suddenly.[20]

Ebenezer, at age 87, married-4 13 Jun 1754 his last wife, Anne Harrison of Needham.[21] He wrote his will a few months later on 17 Sep 1754 describing himself as being "in usual health of body but advanced in years." He lived another ten years.

Ebenezer died “January (?) 1765 in Needham.”[22] He was 97. In his will he left only shillings to his heirs. [See will below.] He gave all the moveable estate to his wife Anne and appointed her and son Nathaniel executors. The inventory of his estate, appraised at only £18, was taken on 8 Feb 1765 by Jonathan Day and Samuel Townsend and presented to court by Anne on 33 Mar 1765.[23][24]

A portion of the Rosemary Brook land continued to be lived on by son Nathaniel and later by his son Ebenezer “Jr.” [Jr. to distinguish him from his grandfather].
