Biography

Robert Ware, Wares, Weares[1][2]

Origin

Robert Ware was born about 1611 in England, possibly the son of Robert Ware and Jane Wade. (Parents are not verified.) He emigrated to Massachusetts Colony by November 1642.[3]. There has been some speculation that Robert is a brother of brother to Peter Ware of Hampton Parish, Virginia. A 1695 Dedham Tax list shows Samuel Bacon, Thomas Eaton, Robert Ware and Comfort Starr side-by-side. The Ware family in Virginia also had ties to both Eaton and Bacon families. The theory is that these were connections from England that carried over to the "new world" in families that settled in both northern and southern colonies.[4]

Marriages and Children

Robert married twice.

  • He married on "24. 1. 1645" (24 March 1644/5) at Dedham, as his first marriage, to "Margrett Huntinge," Margaret Hunting, daughter of John Hunting.[2] [5] Margaret died at Dedham on August 26, 1670.[5]
  • He married on May 3, 1676, as his 2nd, to Hannah Jones (b Mar 28, 1636, d Apr 20, 1721), daughter of Thomas Jones of Dorchester.
"...he married Margaret Hunting, daughter of John and Esther (or Hester) Seaborn Hunting. According to Robert Brand Hanson’s history, Dedham, Massachusetts 1635-1890, John Hunting had been a wandering evangelist in England. After some political-religious skirmishes in the formation of the first church in Dedham and the selection of the first pastor (John Allin), Hunting became the first Ruling Elder of the Dedham church. John’s daughter, Margaret, was probably born in England."[6]
"Margaret Hunting Ware died in 1670, survived by her parents. When her mother, Esther Hunting, died five years later (her Will dated January 4, 1675), she left a one-fourth share of fifteen pounds to the children of her “daughter Ware deceased.”[6]

Six years after Margaret's death, Robert married Hannah Jones (1636-1721), daughter of Thomas Jones of Dorchester, Mass. on May 3, 1676, in Dedham, Mass.

Robert and Hannah lived long lives for their time. He became known as Robert Ware “the Aged.” He died on April 19, 1699, in Dedham, Mass., at age 88.[7]

Excerpts from "Ware Genealogy: Robert Ware of Dedham..."

"'ROBERT WARE,' as he signed his name, though called in public records by several different forms of the name, came from his English home to the colony of Massachusetts Bay some time before the autumn of 1642. The earliest date at which the name in any form occurs on the Dedham Records, is Nov. 25, 1642 ; when 'Robert Weares is Admitted to the purchase of Thomas Eames his house lot and three acres of land.[8]
"Robert Ware joined the church at the time of the baptism of his eldest child, October 2 or 11, 1646. He was made freeman May 26, 1647 ; was member of the Artillery Company in 1644. He lived and died in Dedham, though three of his sons — John, Nathaniel and Robert — removed to Wollomonopoag, set off in 1661, incorporated as Wrentham in 1673. His name stands second in point of wealth on the tax list.
'Robert Ware' married first in Dedham 'Margaret Huntinge 24, 1, 1645' (March 24, 1644-5), daughter of John Hunting, first ruling elder of the Dedham church, and his wife Esther Seaborn. Margaret, the mother of all his children, died in Dedham, August 26, 1670; and Robert 'Weare' married second, May 3, 1676, Hannah Jones (b. March 28, 1636, d. April 20, 1721), daughter of Thomas Jones of Dorchester."[9]
""Robert Ware the Aged" died in Dedham, April 19, 1699. His will, made February 25, 1698, was proved May 11, 1699. The inventory, taken May 3, was £250, 2, 10."[10]

Will

"Robert Ware’s Will, published in Emma Forbes Ware’s Genealogy, gives us some idea of the scope of his life. He owned a house large enough to leave the 'East end' for the use of his wife Hannah, along with portions of his barn, orchard, pasture land, planting field, a fenced lot, and a broad meadow. He also left for her use 'one horse beast' and as much of the household stuff as she should stand in need of, and 'Twenty pounds of money.' He further stated that his son Samuel, who with his own family would be living in the west end of the house, would provide all the firewood Hannah would need and that, in return, Samuel should be paid 'what is just' from his estate for this duty. The remainder of the barn and other buildings, and portions of the orchard and pasture land and lots were also left to Samuel. Other lands were left to his sons Ephraim and Ebenezer, both of whom died in Needham, and smaller amounts of land to 'my children at Wrentham.':[6]

Does anyone have any objections to disconnecting the parents? I can't see any real evidence connecting them. From the intro the the Ware Genealogy it sounds like there are other possibilities. It looks like these parents were suggested in an attempt to connect Robert Ware of MA to Peter Ware of VA. But, Peter Ware's pedigree has been revised, and is now shown to be the son of Peter Ware and Catherine Eton. thanks!

Hi I was specifically referring to the parents currently connected to this profile: Robert Ware b 1602 Ireland d 1659 VA, and Jane Wade also b Ireland d. VA. I just don't see any reason to have them connected at all, even as uncertain. Also, Robert Ware's birthplace as Dedham, Sufflok, England is misleading. Based on the profile, looks like it should just be England, and his origins are unknown???

I'm confused. Correct parents of whom? Cannot identify RW b in Ireland, d in VA.

Is there any evidence suggesting these are the correct parents. Even with the uncertain parents it seems unlikely that Robert Ware b in Ireland, died in VA would be related. If its only speculation, then perhaps a research note with a link to the profiles is more appropriate?

There does not seem to be any evidence that these are his parents. Perhaps they should be removed so that we do not confuse researchers.
