"Last evening Captain Lees received an anonymous letter suggesting a theory that will be considered. The writer said it would be well to locate the dead man's half-brother, John H. Ware. Eugene was the heir to a large estate in Colorado, which at present it tied up in a litigation caused by the father failing in business.
The estate is a part of the separate property left by Eugene's dead mother. She died some time ago, but under her will, according to the story told by Eugene to several friends, he was heir to it all.
He also informed his friends that in the event of his death the property in question would fall to his brother John and his sister, Mrs. Spanier. It seems from what can be learned that old man Ware was a one time a wealthy and influential man in Colorado. On leaving Missouri he went to what is now known as Newcastle and built an odd-shaped dwelling, which the people in that section called Ware's castle, because of its appearance.
Later they spoke of it as the new castle and, when the town became incorporated, it took the name given to Ware's house - Newcastle.
John Ware's mother died and the old man married Eugene's mother, who was well off in lands and other valuable property, Eugene was the only child she had."

He is equally convinced that they were the men who held Up several saloons in Mission and Western Addition about the beginning of the winter, besides others in which a tall and short masked man figured. Mr. Gard found, a peculiar-shaped knife In "the pocket of. the' dead robber at/Reeds/Crossing. It opened by a clasp/and/had/a long, keen narrow blade. This, combined with other circumstances; had led the captain to seriously think that the murder of Eugene Ware, the.St. Nicholas drugstore clerk, was done by Browning and Williams. The murder was commit ted about the middle of November. At that time Williams was living at 305 Grove street and Browning in; a house on Van Ness avenue not far from Grove street. They were close to the.St. Nicholas drug store and . had ample opportunity to study the ways of; the mUrdered clerk.
"I would not say - positively," said the captain, "that either of them murdered Ware/but putting this and that together it is not unreasonable to ; suppose that they did. They have shown themselves to be desperate and dangerous men who would not stop at anything."
