Anne (Ware) Rockett Cowley

Birth: Bef 5 Jan 1695 New Kent County, Virginia, USA
Death: after 27 Sep 1780 Henrico County, Virginia, USA

Anne Ware was christened 5 Jan 1695 in New Kent County, Virginia, the daughter of Rev. Jacob Ware and Susanna Adams. Her parents arrived in Virginia in 1690 from Menheniot Parish, Cornwall, England, and her father served as the minister of St. Peter's Parish in New Kent County from 1690 until 1696. The Wares then moved to Henrico County, where Rev. Ware became the minister of Varina Parish, a position he maintained until his death in July 1709.[1]

Anne Ware married about 1713 to Baldwin Rockett, a native of England. Rockett and three of their sons were "seafaring men" with Baldwin being a ship's chandler. Anne and Baldwin had five sons:

  1. Ware Rockett (abt 1714-aft 1760) - married Mary Poindexter
  2. Francis Rockett (abt 1716-1749) - died in Wapping, London, England, with no issue.
  3. Baldwin Rockett, Jr. (abt 1718-abt 1782) - died in Virginia with no issue.
  4. Capt. John Rockett (abt 1719-aft 1753) - left for New York in 1753. No further information known.
  5. Richard Rockett (abt 1721-1784) - married 27 Jun 1763 in Granville County, North Carolina, to Mary May Abernathy.

After her husband's death in 1730, Anne married Capt. Abraham Cowley and had at least two children:

  1. Abraham Cowley, Jr.
  2. Theodosia Cowley, born about 1740; married about 1755 to William Fleming Cocke[2]

Anne (Ware) Rockett Cowley remained a resident of Henrico Parish at least until 1780. She outlived her son, Baldwin Rockett, Jr., who named his mother in his will dated 27 Sep 1780. She died sometime after that. [3]

Ware-186 and Ware-875 appear to represent the same person because: Even though Ware-875 has little information, I believe she is the same person as Ware-186 because they were born Ware, and each married Abraham Cowley/Cooley. Though not stated, Ann Ware married first to a Rockett. See will of Susannah Adams Ware, 1735 Henrico County, Virginia, <ref>Virginia, Henrico County Will Book for year 1735, reel 2 page 479</ref>
