My grandfather, Jim, did not often talk about his family. His mother abandoned him and his older brother when they were 2 and 4 years old, respectively. They were abandoned on a train. Jim was suffering from pneumonia when they were turned over to authorities. It seems apparent that Nannie kept the baby daughter, as she was not found,. The boys were reunited with their father, Lewis. When they were old enough, they were fostered out to farm families to work for their room and board. The records reflect that Lewis's sister, Ida, lived with them and cared for them for at least part of their childhood. Jim's birthdate makes a number of changes in the records, from 1887 to 1894, I have no idea what the correct date is, as he claimed his birth records were destroyed in a courthouse fire. Jim was playing basball for the Kansas City Blues when he met my grandmother. They were married in 1914.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with James by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with James:
