Biography

Flag of Devon (adopted 2003)
Samuel Ware was born in Devon, England.

Samuel was born in Exeter, Devon, England in 1792 [1]and was christened on 14 Jul 1792. He was the son of Gilbert are and Ann Juliana Pyle.

Samuel married Grace Wills and they had 4 children.

He was listed as the innkeeper of the Devonport Inn at 122 Fore St Hill, Exeter, Devon as early as the 1828 edition of Besley's General Directory of Exeter (merchants and nobility). [1]. The 1831 edition of the Exeter Memories website [2] states that he was the innkeeper at the Devonport Inn from 1831. Besley's Exeter Directory of Voters in 1835 lists him as the innkeeper of the Devonport Inn, Fore St Hill, Exeter. [3].

In the census of 1841, Samuel was still the innkeeper at the Devonport Inn, living there with his wife Grace and daughter, Maria aged 7. [2]A Mary Ware aged 25 was with them and may have been a niece. Samuel's brother John Ware had died the previous year in 1840 and Mary Ware may have been his daughter. Samuel's other daughters Sophia and Fanny were not present and may have been staying with other family members. [3]

The inn comprised 2 sitting rooms at the front of the house, 7 bedrooms, a dining room and kitchen, a bar, brewery, cellars, stables and courtyard.

Samuel died on 18th December 1847, [4]aged 56, leaving his wife and 4 children aged between 7 and 14 as well as a cellar full of beer.

In the census of 1851, his widow Grace was the innkeeper of the Devonport Inn and was living there with her 4 children. Grace Ware ran the Devonport Inn until 1860 when it was taken over by Thomas Upright. [4]

Grace died in 1870.

Samuel's daughter Sophia migrated to the Cape Colony, South Africa in 1880 with her husband and 9 children. She died there in 1884.
