Her father was the innkeeper at the Davenport Inn in Exeter, Devon until he died in 1847 when Maria was 12 or 13. Her mother became the innkeeper until 1860 and died in 1870.
In the census of 1841, Maria was present at the inn with her parents. Her younger siblings were not present and may have been staying with family.
In the census of 1851, she was 19 years old and working as a milliner, living with her mother and 3 siblings at the Davenport Inn. [1]
Maria may have married Henry Tompson in st Thomas, Devon in 1855 and had 2 children, Henry and William.
In 1861 Maria G Tompson and Henry Tomson were living in Exeter with their 2 young sons. [2] NOTE: Her name is written as Martha due to a clerical error.
In 1871 they were still living in Exeter with their 2 sons. [3]
