Biography

John La Warr, (25, or more, years old in 1370) was son and heir of Roger by 1st wife, Elizabeth de Welle [1][2]

Marriage

  2. Elizabeth, before 20 January 1389, daughter and heir of Sir Gilbert de Neville.[2]

Career

John participated in the Wars of Gascony both with his father and then after his father's death,[1] with Edward Prince of Wales in Feb. 1368/9. He was knighted. He took his homage and fealty, on 7 Mar 1370/1.[2]
He was summoned to parliament by writ 8 Jan 1370/1. to 5 Nov 1397 during Edward III and Richard II rein.[1]
He was with the king in Sep 1372 when he attempted an invasion of France and distinguished himself in the raid under Buckingham into Brittany in July 1380 to Apr. 1381.[2]
He did homage to Richard II at his Coronation on 16 July 1377.[2]
He was summoned for military service 13 June 1385.
Due to weakness in his eyes, he was exempted from further attendance of Parliament.[2]
Roger, the Lord of Folkinton, granted by Charter, the manor and advowson of Folkington, the manor of Portslade with its member and the advowson of Aldrington, the manor and advowson of Wickwar, manor of Sixhills with all liberties, to John la Warr Knt., his eldest son, and Elizabeth his wife, and heirs of their bodies, dated 42 Ed III. [2]
John, by two fines, granted to himself and his wife, and heirs, the manor of Durrington, a moiety of the manor of Vernham, and manor of Grafton and by a third fine, the manor of Wakerley.[2]

Death

Elizabeth's will was dated at Grimsthorpe on 12 Oct. 1393 and proved 17 Jan1393/4 at Lincoln.[1][2]
John died 27 July 1398. His will was dated 8 Jan 1397 and proved 1 Aug 1398 at Swinestead and registered at Lincoln.[1][2]
John and Elizabeth were both buried at Swinestead.[1]

He had no surviving issue by either wife, and the title passed first to his younger full brother Thomas, who was at that time aged 40. He was a priest and sometimes Rector of the Church of Manchester. There he was made Collegiate. He was summoned to Parliament by writ from 19 Aug 1399 to 7 Jan. 1425/6 during reins of Richard II to Henry VI. He died unmarried, The Barony passed then to the heirs of his half-sister Joan.[1]
