Biography

Henry Ware was born in 1756 in Caroline County, Virginia. His parents were Henry Ware Sr and Martha Garrett. His father was a blacksmith and served in the Caroline County Militia as early as 1762 and was later Capt of that militia in 1771.

Henry moved with his father and others to Ninety-Six District in South Carolina after 1771,

War came to the colonies and to Virginia and South Carolina after news of fighting in April of 1775 at Lexington and Concord in Massachusetts between Patriots and British regulars. The first land battle of the American Revolutionary War in the South was fought at Ninety Six November 19-21, 1775.[1]

Patriots fought against a Loyalist force at Ninety-Six. [2] Prior to the Revolutionary War, Henry, Jr. lived and worked in Ninety-Six District which later in 1785 became Edgefield County, South Carolina running his general store.

Life after the Revolutionary War

After the war Henry returned to Virginia and married Winifred Mims in Goochland County in 1783. He returned to Ninety-Six District where his father and other family were living. He then along with his father and cousins, received a war service grant of land in Wilkes County, Georgia. With the exception of his cousin Capt. Robert Ware, who remained in Edgefield, all other Wares moved on to Georgia after the war.

Edgefield County was created from within Ninety-Six District, March 12, 1785. Henry Ware is listed on the 1790 census in Edgefield County, South Carolina. There are 2 males and 2 females under age 16 in the family.

Henry is listed on the 1800 census in Edgefield County, South Carolina.

He moved later to Wilkes County in Georgia. Although he had received a warrant for land in Wilkes County in 1785 he apparently did not move there until after 1800.

Last Will and Testament

State of Georgia - In the name of God amen, I Henry Ware, Sen’r. of the county of Lincoln and state aforesaid being at present in a low and feeble state of health, but of a perfect sound mind and memory do make and constitute this my last will and testament revolting and disannuling all others by me heretofore made. First it is my will and desire that all my just debts be first paid. Secondly that all the remaining part of my estate both real and personal I give wholly and solely to my dear and well beloved wife Winey Ware during her life, but at her death to be equally divided among my dear and well beloved children as follows: James, John, Sally, David, Lucy and Britton. But until the death of my dear and well beloved wife Winey Ware, it is my will and desire that she has the management and feesimple right to all my estate both real and personal and if she wishes or feels disposed at any time, to give to any of my well beloved children any part of the estate she is at liberty to do so. But it is my will and desire that it be first valued by three disinterested persons and what ever they say to be the value of said property to be set down against such child or children that receives it as that much received out of their part of the estate. But no gift of this kind made to any of my children by my dear wife shall extend to in real value to more than what they are actually entitled to by an equal division of the estate. And it is further my will and desire that my dear and well beloved wife Winey Ware and my beloved son James Ware and Shadrack Mims do act and serve as my lawful executors to my estate and for my dear children.

In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this sixteenth day of November in the year of our lord one thousand eight hundred and seven.

Signed sealed and acknowledged in the presence of us. Signed: Henry Ware Witnesses: Robert Paul, William Fuqua, Henry Isham Kennon

I am a descendant of Henry Ware Senior ((1728-1801). He was married to Martha (Garrett) Ware (1735-1817. This henry Ware was born in Glouscester Virginia and died in lincon Georgia on 1 November 1801. During the American Revolution this Henry Ware served in the Caroline, VA. militia. During this time he organized and equipped his own militia company which he paid for. All five of his sons served with him. He was a blacksmith.

one of his sons was James Ware (1755-1821). Going ahead in time: My ancestor Martha Jane Ware (1807-1850) married my ancestor Roderick Lewis Watts (1803-1862) from Amherst County, VA.

Hello Denise, I am also a descendant per my research up to this point. I am still actively researching the connection to my family.

I have been sorting out all of the Sarah Ware members of the Ware family. It can be confusing. I know now that Henry Ware Sr. had a daughter named Sarah born in 1762 in Virginia and she was married to Samuel McClendon. She died in 1853 in Henry County, Georgia. Henry's son, Nicholas, also had a daughter named Sarah. She was born about November 1789 in Georgia. She married Beniah McClendon. Family Search profile indicates that Beniah was a son of Samuel and Sarah. Then there is the Sarah that I am most interested in. Henry Ware Sr's son Henry Ware Jr. also had a daughter named Sarah. She was born in April of 1790. She I believe was married to my direct ancestor, Solomon S. Simmons in Columbia County, Georgia in 1809. I have been working on the profiles for all the Ware family that are connected to Sarah Ware that married Solomon Simmons.

If you can help I would appreciate any sources that you can provide.
