Henry Mactier Warfield was born on November 24, 1825 in Howard County, Maryland, USA, son of Daniel Warfield and Nancy Ann Mactier.
Reportedly the first American to establish a branch office in Australia, he operated as a grain merchant. He assumed the role of director for the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad and played a pivotal role in the construction of grain elevators in the Canton neighborhood of Baltimore. Equitable Assurance Company, the Baltimore & Havana Steamship Company, and the Baltimore Chamber of Commerce were all organizations that he helped establish.
He served as Secretary of the anti-Know Nothing Reform Organization in the late 1850s. Its mission was to organize the political governance of Baltimore, specifically the police force. Fort McHenry, Fort Lafayette, and Fort Warren detained him for over fourteen months in 1861 for failing to recite the Union Oath prior to a secession vote.
He remained in Baltimore following the Civil War and was "one of the most well-known and personally well-liked citizens of Baltimore." In 1875, he unsuccessfully ran for mayor on the Reformer platform. Perhaps most notably, he is commemorated today as the grandfather of the Duchess of Windsor.[1]
Henry (24) married Anna Emory (19) (born on December 14, 1830 in Maryland, USA; daughter of Richard Emory and Ann (Gittings) Emory) on April 16, 1850 in Baltimore, Maryland, USA. [2] Their children were:
