Biography

U.S. Southern Colonies Project logo
Mary Waring was a South Carolina colonist.
The Birth Date is a rough estimate. See the text for details.

Mary Waring was a daughter of Thomas Waring and Elizabeth Courtis.[1] Mary was probably born in the Dorchester section of Berkeley County, South Carolina, where her family resided.

In 1744, Mary's Uncle Josiah Waring wrote a will,[2] in which he names her as a beneficiary. He directs his executors to "make a Title to all my lands and the money arising therefrom to be equally Divided by my Executors between the following persons hereafter mentioned Mary & Thomas the son and Daughter of Cosen Thomas Waring Senr." ... and other cousins. Mary would have been of age when Josiah's will was written, and so she was born around 1720-1726.

Her brother Joseph died in 1753 and also named her in his will.[3] He refers to her as "my Sister Mary Waring living at Brother Slanns." This would have been Mary's brother-in-law, Andrew Slann, who married her older half-sister Anne.

No records of a marriage or children have been found, so we must assume that Mary remained unmarried. We do not know the date of her death or place of burial. We will record her death date as "after 1754" when Joseph's will was probated.

If you have more details of Mary Waring's life, please add them. It would be nice to confirm that she did not marry and to know the date of her death."

This is possibly her will (dated 3 September 1761 and proven 7 May 1762). It mentions "Mary Waring, Junior, the daughter of Mrs Waring", "my daughter Sarah Waring", and "the four children" (but children of whom is unclear). Executors named were Humphry Sommers, James Sanders, Joseph Waring and John Thomson. Witnesses to the will were William Smith, Mary Saltus, and Ann Slam [sic: Slanns?].
