Ed Exeter College, Oxford. Snitterby was a fairly rich living worth £1000 a year, given to him by his father's friend Lord Pa lmerston. However, with 8 children, he was usually hard up. A very nice person, loved by all his family. "A scholar himself, with a patient and enquiring mind, he taught each child in turn the elemen ts of Greek, Latin and Mathematics. His method was so clear that his work stuck. Each of the six boys, either by his own skill or through careful enquiries as to ways and means, obtained scholarship s in good schools ..." (from UNCLE LAWRENCE by Oliver Warner, his grandson). When driving his son Richard (DIDS - 35325) in a dogcart and pony he told the little boy, “You won't believe this but when you are grown up this cart will go along by itself, it won't have to be pulled”. (Dids of course lived to see not only automobiles but astronauts!) As a country parson he had a good collection of ' howlers', including the brides who said respectively, "To love cherries and to bay," and "To London for cherries to pay," the bridegroom who promised, "With all my hurdle goods I thee and thou," and t he clergyman who announced, "The Mothers' Union will meet on Wednesday - will any lady who is not a Mother but would like to become one, please see me afterwards in the vestry." Preaching sermons to the local yokels he often said absentmindedly, "Those of you who are familiar with the original Greek ..." A newspaper cutting on Town and Village Life in Lincolnshire mentions that the church at Sni tterby was in a miserable condition when the Revd R E Warner took over from Mr Morey on the latter's death. The altar was a three-legged table with a drawer in it, the cover was a ragged red baize, w hile there was a hole in the shed-like building which formed the chancel. There was no font but a pudding basin and only one broken bell. An aged parishioner asked him, "Do you feel the draught? Th at was the draught that killed Mr Morey." By a great effort from the new vicar and his family and all the parishioners and country folk, the church was completely restored. Richard married his 2nd-c ousin-once-removed MARY JAMETTA HALE YEOMAN** (B5632) in 1864, paying £300 for the privilege as she was a Ward in Chancery. (Richard's grandmother Elizabeth Ottley (B2) was a sister of Mary Trant Ottl ey (B5) - Mary's great-grandmother.) They had 8 children: CONSTANCE, LEONARD, MARY, BASIL, RICHARD, LAWRENCE, WYNYARD and MARMADUKE
