Daniel Warner was born at Northampton (or Hatfield), Province of Massachusetts Bay, on the first day of March, 1693 (New Style date), to Daniel and Mary (Hubbard) Warner.[1][2]
An array of evidence clearly indicates that Daniel married first Thankful Billings. Although the union has been questioned (see "Disputed Spouse" section), a combination of circumstances -- known marriage, daughter's birth record, and finally, Daniel's will -- prove that the younger Daniel married Thankful Billings in 1714. Three years after her 1716 death -- which followed the birth of their one child, daughter Thankful, by just five days -- Daniel was remarried, to Elizabeth Adams of Suffield, Connecticut, in December of 1719.[3] Their intentions had been published on the 13th of September; the marriage took place on December 29.[4]
Daniel and Elizabeth had the following (known) children:[5]
Daniel died on 1 January 1770 at East Haddam, Connecticut. It is of note that his daughter Thankful is specifically mentioned in his 1755 will, immediately following his specification of what he leaves to his second "beloved" wife Elizabeth Adams; noting that Thankful is already "Disceasd", he leaves a bequest of £150 to her children. This proves her paternity, and is the conclusive piece of circumstantial evidence that she was the daughter of first wife Thankful (Billings) Warner.[7]
There is a century-old question about Daniel's first marriage: as indicated in his Biography, evidence plainly indicates that he married Thankful Billings in August of 1714; however, it should be noted that a 1919 genealogy asserted, without offering either a source or a rationale, that Thankful was actually the second wife of Daniel's father (profile: Daniel Warner) -- even while acknowledging that a "History of Amherst Church" (a text not located as of March, 2019) disagreed, stating that Thankful had married the younger man.[8]
As Thankful (Billings) Warner's birth is not found in known records, her age cannot be compared to that of father or son, which likely would have helped clarify which one she wed; the junior Daniel would have been twenty-one at the time of the marriage, in August of 1714 -- somewhat younger than the average marrying age of young men at the time, but certainly not shockingly so. The 1910 "History of Hatfield" guardedly sides with the "History of Amherst Church", reporting that the junior Daniel "prob. m. (1) Thankful Billings".[9]
For the senior Daniel to have wed Thankful Billings, his ties to wife Mary Hubbard Warner must first have been severed by death or divorce before 1714; no record of either such event has been found to date (March 2019). While Mary last gives birth to a recorded child in January of 1710[10], she would by then -- even if married as young as age 18 in 1688 -- have been 40, and it would hardly be unusual if she did not bear children after that time; it certainly does not imply her death.
Thankful (Billings) Warner died at Swampfield -- the original name of Sunderland -- less than a week after giving birth to their only child, daughter Thankful Warner, in early June of 1716.[11] Sunderland is the town named as the residence of Daniel Warner III in the record of his 1719 marriage to Elizabeth Adams... further evidence that Thankful Billings was his first wife.
The conclusive piece of evidence of the marriage, as noted above in the Biography, is that in his 1755 will, Daniel makes specific mention of Thankful (Warner) Dickinson -- previously deceased -- as his daughter. The birth record of the one candidate for this Thankful shows her to have been the child of Daniel Warner and wife Thankful -- Thankful (Billings) Warner.

A different Daniel Warner Jr. married Anne or Anna Pember on 24 Jan. 1741 in Stafford, Tolland Co., CT.[12][13] Although a question has been raised concerning this Daniel's identity -- speculating that this Daniel Jr. was Daniel Warner III -- the Daniel who married Anne was in fact a son of John and Tabitha (Abbe) Warner of Enfield.[14]. A Maltby family genealogy also names him as Daniel Jr., but without specifying parentage.[15]
Thanks to M. Cole (June, 2019) for providing access to the will of Daniel Warner III, proving the identity of Thankful (Warner) Dickinson as Daniel's daughter, and Thankful (Billings) Warner as her mother.
