Howard Owen Warner was born August 14, 1908, the third child of Ed and Lela Warner. He was the only child to be born in New Mexico. Howard's older brother, Darrell was born in Iowa in April 1,1906 and so the family would have moved sometime after that but before Howard was born.[1]
According to his sister, Sally, their parents went to New Mexico with Ed's unmarried brothers looking for a better life.[2]. According to the 1910 New Mexico federal census, Ed's brothers Jay, David and Harry were living in Nara Visa, New Mexico with their mother, Mary. They moved for opportunity. Both real estate companies and the railroad in New Mexico advertised all over the country for homesteaders, offering credit, financial aid and sometimes even fare to come and settle. The Warners grew canteloupe for the local farm service and lived in sod cabins. Apparently, while living there, more than once they were flooded with torrential rains which completely washed their homes away. Ed and Lela got tired of living without a house while they rebuilt yet again, and so sometime between Howard's birth and the birth of his next sibling, Cecil in 1910, the family moved back to Hardin County, Iowa and were there by 1915.[3] By 1920, Ed had purchased a farm and the family began farming near Iowa Falls, Iowa where Howard attended school with his brothers and sisters.[4] He graduated from Iowa Falls High School, sometime around 1926 and worked on his father's farm.
Howard married Elizabeth Mark on June 27, 1928 in Webster City, Iowa. At some point early in their marriage, Howard and Elizabeth moved into a house on his father's farm where Howard helped with the farmwork and was a volunteer fireman. In the 1930 federal census, Elizabeth and Howard were not in the same ED as Howard's parents, however they are listed right next to his uncle William who owned and Howard was marked as renting.[5] It was here on May 3, 1929 Howard and Elizabeth's only child, Patricia King was born at home on the farm. [6]
Once they did move onto the farm, unbeknowst to his parents, Howard also worked as a bootlegger, keeping a still under the living room floor of his house.[2] There is no way to know whether Elizabeth knew or if she did how she may have felt about illegal bootlegging out of their home, but when his parent's found out, Elizabeth and baby Patsy were kicked out along with Howard. Presumably, this is when Howard and Elizabeth separated, sometime around 1932. Elizabeth moved in with her sister Beulah and they officially divorced in Story County, Iowa on May 23, 1934.
It is not known where Howard went. thought that Howard had gone to Chicago looking for work with some of his brothers. There is some proof as to that location in the fact that just months after the divorce on September 24, 1934, Howard married his second wife, Jeannette Lucas in Cook County, Illinois.[7] Howard and Jeannette had seven children, including Shirley Ann and Ben.
Howard died from a cerebral hemorage, chronic alcoholism on August 8, 1959 and is buried in Union Cemetery, Iowa Falls, Iowa.[8][9]
