Biography

Mary was born about 1775 to Hinchey Warren-6171 and Rachael Anderson-6154 in Stokes, North Carolina. She married Benjamin Hasty and the couple had four children before migrating to Franklin County, Tennessee. In Tennessee they had six more children. Benjamin died in 1842 and Mary moved to live with her daughter. She died about 1864 in Tennessee.

Previously, Nancy (Hasty) Francisco was attached as a child to this profile. This attachment is in error. Please see the G2G thread here: Nancy (Hasty) Francisco (1803 - 1850) is NOT the daughter of Ben and Mary (Warren) Hasty. Nancy Francisco should not be re-attached to this profile without legitimate sourcing and discussion.

Incorrect parents attached to this profile

Previously, Hinchley Warren and Rachel (Anderson) Warren were attached as the parents of Mary. This connection has been disproved. Please see the notes below. Hinchely and Rachel should not be reattached to this profile without proper sourcing and discussion.

  • Per the source on the profile of Hinchey Warrnen [Warren-6171] who was previously listed as the father for Mary, this Mary is not his daughter:

Birth

Mary Warren was born about 1775 to unknown parents[1]

Marriage

Mary was married to Benjamin Hasty. While no record has been found for their marriage, research suggests that they were married in North Carolina about 1798.[2] The oldest known child Mary (likely a twin to Nancy) was most likely born in 1803, a time that fits well with the estimated marriage date. Mary's parents are not yet known but the Hasty and Warren families bought and sold from each other in Iredell County, North Carolina from 1803 to 1809. Researcher Marie Dean Speakman believes that Mary is from these North Carolina Warren families[3] (see additional information in the Research Notes section).

Children

Benjamin and Mary had at least ten children:

i. Mary (Hasty) Arnold (possible Martha Mary or "Marth"), b. abt 1803 in North Carolina, m. abt. 1824 to William Arnold in Franklin, TN, d. abt. 1880 in Howard, Arkansas.[2] Mary's married name Arnold is listed in the Benjamin's probate documents; she is listed as "daughter Mary Arnold of Wayne County, Tennessee."[4] Mary and her sister Nancy are believed to be twins.[5] (Note: many online trees list Mary as Martha or Marth, possibly she was Mary Martha, used Martha while her mother Mary was alive, and Marth was a nickname).
ii. Nancy (Hasty) Carter, b. 1803 in North Carolina, m. 4 Oct. 1821 to George Washington Carter in Franklin, TN,[6][7] d. 8 Oct 1850 in Wayne County, TN.[2] Nancy's married name Carter is listed in the estate (probate) documents filed in 1842 after Benjamin's death; she is listed as "Nancy Carter of Franklin County, Tennessee."[4] Nancy is believed to be the twin of Mary.[5]
iii. Benjamin Hasty, b. abt. 1804 in North Carolina, m. to (Unknown) abt. 1824, d. before 1842 in Bibb, Alabama.[2] Benjamin is listed in Benjamin's probate documents as deceased in Alabama leaving behind 4 children under the age of 21.[4]
iv. John James Hasty, b. 1808 in North Carolina, m. 1827 to Margaret Cook in Franklin, TN, d. 1882 in Dallas, Arkansas.[2] In Benjamin's probate documents, John is listed as living in Clark County, Arkansas.[4]
v. William Martin Hasty, b. 1811 in Franklin, TN, m. 1833 to Lovina Foster Wittenburg in Taladega, Alabama, m. 2nd, 13 Sep 1864 to Minnie Gore in Williamson, TX, d. 1898 in Williamson, TX.[2] William was listed in Benjamin's probate documents, living in Alabama.[4]
vi. James (or Jamal) Hasty, b. 1812 in Franklin, TN.[2] James was listed in Benjamin's probate documents as living in Alabama.[4]
vii. Robert Hasty, b. 1815 in Franklin, TN, m. abt. 1835 to Susannah (Unk) in Franklin, TN, d. aft. 1850.[2] Robert was listed in Benjamin's probate documents as living in Franklin County, Tennessee.[4]
viii. Sarah (Hasty) Cobb, b. 1817 in Franklin, TN, m. 10 Feb 1842 in Franklin, TN to James Kenzie Cobb, d. before 1900 in Moore, TN (husband James listed as widow on 1900 census)[2][8] Sarah's married name is listed in Benjamin's probate documents as "daughter Sarah Cobb of Franklin, TN."[4] (possible twin to Joseph)
ix. Joseph L. Hasty, b. 22 Jan 1817 in Franklin, TN, m. abt. 1834 in TN to Mary Lynn, d. 2 July 1881 in Bedford, TN.[2] Joseph was listed by name in his father's will[8] and also in the probate records.[4] (possible twin to Sarah)
x. Matthew Hasty, b. June 1823, in Franklin, TN, m. 23 Dec 1839 to Charlotte Jones in Fayetteville, Lincoln, TN, d. aft. 1880 in Hill County, TX[2] (Note, some online trees show year of death as 1887)[citation needed]. Matthew is named in Benjamin's probate records.[4]
Note: Many online trees show a child James Hasty, b. 1825, d. 1843. There are no records to support this connection, the trees are unsourced and the record(s) are likely conflated.

Migration to Tennessee

At some time in the early 19th century, Benjamin and Mary migrated from North Carolina to Tennessee. Their first four children were born in North Carolina, the last born in North Carolina was John James who was born in 1808. Their next child William Martin was born in 1811 in Tennessee. Mary's husband Benjamin and his brother Jourdan conducted several land transactions in Iredell County, North Carolina between 1803 and 1809. It is likely that the Benjamin and Mary migrated from North Carolina to Tennessee in 1810.

Death of husband Benjamin

There are several clues that indicate the state of Mary's husband Benjamin's state of health in 1840. When the 1840 US Census was conducted in June, Mary was listed as the head of household.[9] This would suggest that Benjamin may have been an invalid. His will was written 8 Jun 1840 and he died two months and a half months later.

Benjamin's will left the home for Mary to use for the rest of her natural life and also left some property for daughter Sarah. The remainder of the property, and later, the homestead, was to be divided between the children evenly. Benjamin appointed as the executors of his estate, his son Joseph, and his son-in-law George Washington Carter, the husband of his daughter Nancy.[8]

Benjamin died on 22 August 1840 in Big Hurricane Creek, Franklin County, Tennessee, and was buried in Hasty Cemetery in Lynchburg, Moore County, Tennessee.[10]

A bill was submitted to the Chauncery Court by the executors on 6 December 1842. The bill included a the will, land settlement records, and a list of the names of all of Benjamin and Mary's children, their county or state of residence at that time, and the daughter's married names:[4]

Mary Arnold of Wayne County, Tennessee
Nancy Carter of Franklin County, Tennessee
The four children of deceased son Benjamin Hasty, now living in Alabama
John James Hasty of Clark County, Arkansas
William Martin Hasty of Talladega, Alabama
James Hasty of Alabama
Robert Hasty of Franklin County, Tennessee
Sarah Cobb of Franklin County, Tennessee
Joseph Hasty of Franklin County, Tennessee
Matthew Hasty of Franklin County, Tennessee

At the time the will was written, only Benjamin and Mary's three youngest sons remained at home: Robert 25, Joseph aged 23, and Matthew aged 17. The selection of a son-in-law as Benjamin's executor seems like a natural choice: at the time of the writing of the will, George, aged 40 years, had married Benjamin and Mary's daughter Nancy 19 years earlier and the couple produced 9 of Benjamin and Mary's grand-children. Additionally, George and Nancy lived next door to Benjamin and Mary; with nine grandchildren living next door, we it would be reasonable to assume that the families were close and that Benjamin and George were friends.

Benjamin's estate was finally settled on 13 October 1846.[4]

Life after Benjamin

We do not know for how long Mary remained living in her family home. By 1850 she is found on the census living in District 14, Franklin, Tennessee in the home of son and daughter-in-law Robert and Susannah. She is listed as "Polly" Hasty; researcher Gordon Banks writes that Polly was a common diminutive name for Mary.[2]

The census listed the following family members:
Household Role Sex Age Birthplace
Robert Hasty M 35 Tennessee
Susannah Hasty F 34 Tennessee
Samuel Hasty M 14 Tennessee
James A Hasty M 13 Tennessee
Martha Hasty F 11 Tennessee
Mary M Hasty F 8 Tennessee
Sarah A Hasty F 5 Tennessee
William T Hasty M 2 Tennessee
Polly Hasty F 65 North Carolina

Mary has not yet been found in the 1860 census and her exact whereabouts at that time are not known.

Research Notes

Notes regarding Mary's parents

Extensive research has been conducted to find the parents of Mary Warren and to date no evidence has been found that proves her parentage. At this time, her parents are unknown.
  • From the research of Gordon Banks:
Note (Marie Dean Speakman) 5/00:
The surname of Mary Warren Hasty was never known (nor have we ever been able to find her parentage despite much research). The name "Warren" was from a letter dated January 12, 1933 (copy in my possession) written by a grandson of "Ben Hasty and Mary Warren". This grandson was Augustus Parmer Hasty, born 1848 in Alabama. In this letter he gave a partial pedigree of himself and his 11 children back to old Benjamin and Mary Warren Hasty. However, he only listed 2 of Benjamin and Mary's children (including his [Augustus Parmer Hasty's] parents William Martin Hasty and Lovina Foster Whittenberg). He explained in this old letter that "the reason I can't give any more information is my mother died when I was a small boy and I went to live with my grandfather. Our records were destroyed." (Note by Marie S.: This must have been his maternal grandfather because Augustus Parmer Hasty wasn't born until 1848, and his grandfather Benjamin Hasty died in 1840.)
Note (Marie Dean Speakman) 6/03:
We find Benjamin and Jordan Hasty buying and selling (and receiving grants for) land in Iredell Co. NC from 1803-1809. There was a large group of Warren's there at this time and some of the land Benjamin and Jordan bought and sold was from or to the Warren families and their in-law families. I FEEL THERE IS A GOOD CHANCE MARY WARREN HASTY IS A RELATIVE OF THESE WARREN'S). Much of the information I have on the Iredell Warren's came from contacts of Luanne Spence Taylor, and from searching at the FHL recors of Rowan Co., NC; Burke Co., NC formed 1777 from Rowan; Iredell Co., NC formed in 1788 from Rowan Co.; and Alexander Co., NC formed from Iredell Co. in 1847.[2]
