William Warren was born on 20 May 1848 at La Pointe on Madeline Island, the son of William W. Warren and Mathilda Aitkin. He was baptized on 20 August 1848 by Father Otto C. Skolla with the name Guillaume Vincent. His godparents were Vincent Roy Sr. and Angelique Larose.[1]
In 1850 his family was living at Gull Lake.[2] They were still there in 1857, though his father had passed away four years prior.[3]
In 1860 William and his siblings were living with their uncle's family at the Indian Agency at Crow Wing, though his mother is recorded with the following household.[4]
William married Jennie Kennifek on 24 December 1876. At the time of the marriage he was living in Becker County, probably at White Earth Reservation.[5] By 1880, he was recorded as widowed and living with his sister Madeline's family, still at White Earth. He was employed as a policeman.[6] However, his wife was still alive and living with her parents. She is listed as single, but their household includes two-year-old Vincent Warren and three-month-old Mary.[7]
William passed away on 24 March 1900 in Minnesota.[8]
Based on the research I have done so far via Newspapers.com and FamilySearch, I find it very unlikely William married nine times in ~35 years. The only wives I have been able to confirm he had children with is "Belle," a daughter of Hole-in-the-Day; Jennie Kennifick; and Ellen/Nay Nah Quay Wah Bequay. I don't believe he had a relationship with Way Quib Bunga, as her son John Warren's death certificate lists a Donald Warren as his father. Additionally, I have not seen any mention of the children Wahbishkunegeanc, Isabelle, Mooshaince, Grace, Ahjegahdayquay, John, or Maggie. Some of these may be duplicates with one as their English name and one as their Ojibwemowin name. It is also likely that they have been mixed up with other Warrens on White Earth Reservation.
