Biography

Phebe, daughter of Elisha B "Mervin" Warthen and Phoebe Wright,[1] was born 3 November 1847 in Washington Township, Licking County, Ohio.[2][3] Her mother died soon after her birth on 24 November 1847.[4] Her father did not remarry for more than a decade, so was left with several small children and a farm. He appears to have given his children into the care of various relatives.

In 1850 her siblings Elizabeth (age 6) and William Spencer Warthen (4) lived with their uncle Oliver Hazard Perry Warthen (age 23, farmer) in the household of Elizabeth Nye.[5] Phebe (age 3) resided in an inn run by Richard (46) and Electa Hammon (39) in Utica, Washington Township.[6] She is likely being tended by her aunt Anna B. Warthen (age 32 m. Hare Wright) listed as Nancy Hair, although the relationship is uncertain.[6] Others at the inn included William (18, laborer), Mary (67) and Amanda Hammon (24); Adalade Crosby (17); C. (36, wagon maker) and Nancy Hair (32); Phebe Warthen (3); and Fred Hinman (67, farmer).[6]

After her father remarried, his children returned home. The household in Fredonia, Washington Township in 1860 encompassed Elisha B. M. (age 42, farmer) and his second wife Sarah E. Warthon [sic] (26), Phebe A. (13), her siblings Elizabeth (16) and William J. (14) and her half-sister Mary Harriet Bell Warthen (1).[7]

About 1871[3] she married John Alonza Clutter, son of John Clutter and Rachel Marlin. They had two daughters:

  • Cecella A. Clutter (b. 1877; d. 1879).[13][3]

Although documentary evidence is slim, it appears that the family may have migrated to Americus Township, Lyon County, Kansas, about 1873 with John's brother Walden, who was there for six years before returning to Ohio.[14] Their daughter Lora believed for decades that she was born in Kansas and only in 1952 did she obtain a delayed birth certificate showing her birth in Ohio.[8]

Before 1880, they returned to Morgan Township, Knox County, Ohio, where they lived very hear her father-in-law.[15] The household was composed of John A. (age 31, farmer), Phebe A, (32) and Selora A. Clutter (6).[15] Lora married in 1893,[10] leaving John A. (age 52, farmer) and Phebe A. (53, mother of two, one living) residing on the farm in Morgan Township.[3] They had been married for 29 years.[3]

John A. (61) and Annabbel [sic] (62) relocated to her native home in Washington Township before 1910.[16] About 1927 the couple moved to Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania,[17] where their daughter Lora lived with her husband,[18] and on to nearby Wilkinsburg, Allegheny County,[19] where her husband John died in 1930.[20]

Phebe died 29 September 1937 and was buried at South Lawn Cemetery in Utica, Licking County,[2] beside her husband.[21]
