Biography

William, born about 1616, matriculated at Balliol College, Oxford, June 15th, 1632, aged fifteen. He graduated B.A. April 22nd, 1634, and M.A. July 2nd, 1639, having become, February 15th, 1637-8, a student of Gray's Inn. In 1636 he was elected Fellow of Oriel, and in May, 1648, gave the following answer to the Parliamentary Visitors : "Were I sufficiently perswaded that I might submitt to this Visitation salva conscientia I should readily obay it : but not beinge satisfied herein I cannot at present give any fuller Answere." His name appears among those who were expelled, but he was one of those "who afterwards made their Peace with the Visitors and returned to their Fellowships some sooner some later." (Walker's Sufferings, ii. 132.) Wood, speaking of him and others, says, "Though they did not directly submit yet the greater part of them kept their places by the same means that others did." (Annals.)

In 1656 he became vicar of St. Mary's, Oxford (Al. Ox.), and in 1669 he joined his elder brother Thomas as Prebendary of Gloucester, where he was buried Decem ber 1st, 1675, dying unmarried. The tablet to him, alongside of that to his brother, has the family arms above it with a mullet, and is thus inscribed :—
