Mary Townshend Washington, daughter of Lawrence Washington, is estimated to have been born about 1755 in King George County, Virginia by the age at which she married.
She was married to Robert Stith on July 29, 1773 in St Paul's Parish.[1] She was named in her husband's will, dated May 14, 1788 in King George County.[2]
Mary was no stranger to grief. She was widowed at a fairly young age when Robert Stith passed away in 1791. There is no indication she ever remarried. Then imagine, if you can, learning your son fell overboard from a ship of which he was third in command, and the crew was unable to take him back up. This was the fate of young Putnam Stith in 1796.
She appears to have remained in King George County, appearing on Personal Property Tax Lists through 1800.[3][4][5] Her name appears on a deed dated 12 April 1800 when her only surviving son John Stith sold land to Battaile Fitzhugh in King George County which had passed from Robert B. Stith's great-uncle, John Buckner, to Robert's uncle, John Stith, then to his father Buckner, who had deeded it to him in 1773. This land is identified by the fact that John Stith's widow Ann (Wray) Stith was still living and had a life estate on it.[6]
