Joseph Washington was born in the year 1828 at Sheffield, County Yorkshire, England, His parents were Joseph Washington and Mary Bright . On the 1st of October 1848 at Sheffield St. Peter and Paul's Cathedral in County Yorkshire (West Riding), England, Joseph married Sarah Carnell. According to their Marriage Record they were both 20 years of age making their birth years 1828. Together they had these Children:

After the death of Joseph's first wife Sarah Carnell, he remarried to Harriet Speight on the 26th of Dec 1870 at Sheffield, but that marriage did not work out. They appear to separate and go their ways. Divorce was highly expensive in England during this time period and the common man could not afford the fees require for a divorce, so often a couple would separate and just live with the next person out of wedlock. Joseph Washington was no different.
About the year 1874, Joseph Washington and his youngest two children, Joseph and George came to America with him. They all settled in the area of Litchfield County, CT. His youngest son George is seen in the 1880 U.S. Federal State Census for Litchfield County, CT. It says that his mother was Eliza, BUT she was not his real mother, Sarah Carnell was. There is a birth certificate for George Washington at the GRO Online Index for his birth naming his parents as Joseph Washington and Sarah Carnall.
Before Joseph's death in 24 March 1876, he was living with a women who he called his wife named Elizabeth or Eliza. It's unknown who she was exactly, BUT they were not married, just living as they were. Remember, he had not divorced his 2nd wife Harriet to expensive. There is a Death Certificate for his wife as Mrs. Elizabeth Washington at the Town of Litchfield, in Litchfield Co., CT. She was buried at Northfield Cemetery next to Joseph who is also buried at this same Cemetery. Joseph Washington's death is also registered in the books called "Record of Deaths in the Town of Litchfield, 1874", p.470-471. According to this Death Record, Joseph had died from the complications of Diabetes Melitus.
After Joseph Washington's death on the 24th of March 1876, several Obituaries when out in the Sheffield Daily Telegraph, in Sheffield, County Yorkshire, England, reporting his death. This was done, so his 2nd wife, Harriet who he hadn't divorced would have the freedom to marry again.
Joseph Washington's Occupation was a "Cutler" He had been trained by his father and his father before him. He brought his trade with him when he came to America in about the year 1874 and his Children, William, Joseph and George continued in the trade in Litchfield, CT.
He passed away after 1876.
