Research Note

The last name of Gardener, likely represents her father's primary skill, rather than a LNAB. In the Mount Vernon Slavery database[1] a Barbary A is recorded at Dogue Run in the Overseer's Account book, 1785-1798 as being one of the "Negroes Belonging to George Washington in his own Right and by Marriage, June 1799."
